70 Series Dual Sport Tires
Where have all the 70 Series Dual Sport Tires Gone?
Notice the difference in size between the two tires. (the picture is exaggerated because the CST tire is not inflated.) The stock RX3 CST tire has a 70 aspect ratio. The Shinko has an 80 aspect ratio. There is about a 2 inch difference in diameter. I bought the 1" lowering link and the narrow seat for my RX3 to bring the seat height down. With the new Shinko it goes back up an inch. The only 70 series dual sport tire that I could find is the RX3 stock CST tire in 130/70-17. Other 70 series tires of that size are all street tires. Something to think about when purchasing a new rear tire. jb

theres not meany for dirt /ADV... they put the rim to close to the ground at low pressure
high chance of rock damage... I run 90 & 100 on my dirt only bikes ... can run below 10psi with out a worry of rock damage to the rim.... CST "Ching Shin Tire" is one of the few that do anymore... they do make quite a few quirky little tyres... only one that springs to mined in the style you are after is the Avon trailrider 120/70/17 but they an't cheap... ..

On my Shinko 244s I go from 32/33PSI to 22/24 when I go off-road. I've done the same thing with the CST tires when just cruising around on forest service roads. I'd never thought about the aspect ratio in regards to rim damage based on how low you can take the pressure down. Interesting and helpful. Thanks!

JB, I have that same Shinko 705 out back on my DR650. It's a great tire, but be really careful in the wet with it. It gets super slick and squirrelly when you lean it over at all. Even going straight and riding in the wake of the front tire it doesn't seem planted. Just my thoughts and personal experience, though. It may be different for a lighter bike with different tire pressures. YMMV. Happy Riding!

I have the 705 on my DR650 as well. I have only occasionally been caught in the rain. Never noticed it being squirrelly, but that may be because I slow down, and am sensitive not to lean the bike any more than necessary. jb

I'm really curious about the 705's. I don't want anything too aggressive because we spend 90% pavement, 10% graveled road. The upside is the stock tires seem to do very well for our needs, but I'd like to have other options without raising the bike height.

It definitely raises the seat height. With my 30" inseam, I can barely tiptoe on both sides at a stop. It looks like the stock CST tire is the only dual sport tire in the 130/70-17 size. I thought the CST tire performed well and lasted a long time. When I wear out the Shinko, I may go back to the stock tire. jb

Here's a thought. Still a 70 series but 10mm wider per side (150/70). Think this would fit? I've gone wider tires on my big cruisers without an issue but not sure how it would work on the RX3. At least you'd have your same height, right? May be tough to get on the rim.

When I checked the Shinko website, that 150/70 tire has a diameter of 25.28 inches. The 130/80 tire that I mounted has a diameter of 25.20". I'm getting used to the bike sitting higher, just worried that when I install the already purchased 19" wheel and tire, the front will be raised another 1/2". When I wear out the 705, I will likely go back to the stock CST tire. jb

But that tire also is not available in a "70" series aspect ratio. jb

The Kenda 761's are what I have on Q and no complaints. I'm getting good wear out of them and they handle the paved twisties quite predictably.
