CG oil cooler questions
I have been using the bad weather time to do all the modding and repairs to the rat magician I can afford before spring. Finally read almost all the posts on the forum about oilcoolers and the picked one out and ordered. Ended up getting THIS
Should get here around FEB 1st. So my 2 questions are: 1. I understand the pump is a "sucking" type and acts as a check valve. Do I need to open an oilcoolers line and drain it separately from the oil sump every time I change oil? Or are you just changing the quart or so in the sump and leaving what is in the cooler? 2. Does anyone monitor they're oil temps? What temps are common to see. I'd like to use THIS however the max temp is only 275F. Thanks in advance. -diy

I drain mine each time but my coolers are mounted vertical and just disconnect the hose to drain it. I monitor the oil temps and never gone over 190* so that gauge will be fine.

Thanx Jerry. Can I ask where your oil temp sensor is located?

I'm considering putting one on the Hawk. But I'll just change it a quart at a time and often. Seems like a bunch of fuss and messy to disconnect the lines each time.

Exactly what I was thinking. I change every 1000km now so just keep that up. And with the cooler ,only change the 1 qt. sump oil only. But I was interested in what people are already doing and why.

That is the exact cooler I have. It works perfectly even with my fender blocking half of the fins.
As far as oil changes go, you don't have to drain the oil every time. While longer oil changes and a higher capacity are nice side effects, the big appeal is a cooler running motor, and it does a great job of doing that even in 100 plus temps. The only way to make it better would be a fan with a thermoswitch.
