Wacky Day Yesterday
So I have this Defib/Pacemaker installed for about 6 years now. It came in damn handy once a year after install, but has been silent since. My med barrage has been keeping the ticker going well and I've had no issues.....until yesterday.
Wasn't feeling in top shape but plugging along. Some other med changes have had me weirded out a little, but I didn't think much of it. Just the usual drudgery and aches and pains of aging, I guess. I was out in the new shop yesterday rearranging the shelves to fit more stuff from the garage when I thought... "I've never heard that tone in that particular Allman Bros song before...". Then it hit me. I cupped my implant with my hand and the sound got WAY louder. Oh shit..... I looked at the dog, "Spot...gotta cut this short. Let's go get mom." I didn't feel anything odd other than that sinking feeling and (honestly) the first thought of, "So....I guess this is how it's going to happen?" Into ER we go. Still not feeling any pain but kinda tripped out and dizzy....and of course, waiting for something to happen.... "How can we help you?" the lady asks. I pointed at my chest, "My alarm went off." Next thing I know....VOOM!!! I was behind the wall, on a gurney, and hooked up. Blood work, chest X-Ray, EKG, etc...etc.... and (I carry my card with me), they read my implant with a Star Trek hand-held doo-hickie. An hour later....everything came back perfect. No bad rhythms, enzymes, chest was clear. "Your unit has recorded nothing erratic in the last few months. Your heart is pumping fine. The only thing Medtronics (the pacemaker folks) can think of is an outside magnetic influence may have been involved to set off your alarm." Obviously, me and the Mrs. were relieved. I got released and home we went.. Then it dawned on me. The very last thing I did while moving stuff on the shelf was relocate a compression tester set.....AND A BIG ASS DRILL, which I held against my chest for a second, while I planted the compression tester on the shelf above. Moral of the story. If you have something in your chest that keeps you going, steer clear of big magnets! It will really screw up your day......

hmm. The doctor wants me to get one. Me, at 35 as of yesterday is against it for reasons like this. Anything else ever cause it issues? I fly RC planes so a strong 2.4ghz signal and up to 6kw brushless motors are common. Also notice you shouldn't be near car ignition systems, so is working on the bikes/toys a concern? Every time I ask the doctor about changes in quality of life and what not he just blows it off as "everything will be fine" but I trust that statement about as much as a wet fart.

I knew magnetism could effect it but as everything else, I feel good and totally forget about it. I work over running cars, motorcycles, electronics, etc and have never had a problem. Yesterday, I just learned not to hold a giant drill full of magnets against my chest.....which in all honesty, I knew. Just blew it off not thinking. It didn't shut it off or effect its operation. Just gave me a warning shot across the bow. Not sure of your situation but for me, I'll take it. I get the decision though.

I'm glad it was a false alarm, that's some scary s#*t right there and I'm sure it got the Missus upset as well.
I just got got out of Riverside, the heart hospital in Columbus last Sunday. I'd had a falling out with my previous cardiologist a year ago and was treating myself with aspirin therapy and compression socks for my A-fib and congestive heart failure. Well about 6 weeks ago I woke up in terrible pain and my leg and foot purple and swollen up bigger than it had been. I just figured the CHF had gotten worse and resolved that this was the end. Then a few weeks later I was having AF attacks almost daily and was lightheaded all the time. On the last day I was losing consciousness (my blood/ox was 78) and my foot went numb, off to the ER we go. Turns out it was DVT, a blood clot in a major artery on the inside of my leg. They did a sonogram and CT scan and the doc said it was the worst he'd ever seen. The clot runs from my groin to my ankle and is only flowing about 10%. So they shipped me off to the heart hospital for a barrage of tests and IV blood thinners. With a clot this big I have a real good chance of having a pulmonary embolism which left untreated has a 30% mortality rate. So now I'm on a double dose of eloquis and a special diet, and had to quit drinking. The Cardio Group accepted me as a patient and they're sending me an event monitor, and if the clot hasn't improved in 30 days they're gonna do a Thrombectomy to physically remove it. Fun fun.
