small computer for Hawk
Has anyone used a raspberry pi or similar to integrate with one of these chinese bikes?
I am thinking of a few simple things I could do: Turn off blinker based off distance(GPS) or lean angle returning to normal. Temp sensor going to engine to check temp. RPM based shift buzzer/light

How bout an android app programmed with engine readouts, speed etc. Can you wireless or usb link these pi's to a smartphone . The possibilities have only begun with these cheap little processors and folks like you to explore.
Seems like you would need to really seal it up on an application like a motorbike. And then you have the killing heat buildup, many hurdles as in any endeavor.

I am probably going to use the next thing chip. Built in Bluetooth and wifi.
I plan to hook it to my Bluetooth helmet. Makes it easy to get audio out of it. Using a smartphone as a screen is an option. I will have to look at that. I am going to put all my stuff in the air box. Since I have a pod filter it is unused. The chip also has a built in lipo charger so I can put use that as a built in ups. Have it run for 30 minutes after shutting off the bike to upload any music or diag stuff.

Can you run fuel injection with it? Maybe get a microsquirt and add it as a module?

I looked into EFI and even if I tried to home brew it the cost seems high. Maybe at some point.
The chip is a $9 linux computer. has 4GB of flash onboard and with no moving parts I assume it will do just fine with the vibration and temp. Arduino is nice but considering the built in wifi/bluetooth on the chip same setup on arduino would be way more.

Chip will work good. Especially for using any number of programs (especially QT) already in existence for data logging etc. You can use VNC right from your phone so you don't have to worry about a display.
If you wanted something just to preform simple functions like you mentioned above you might consider one of the boards from particle formally known as spark. As you can push code remotely and have the option of cheap cellular data their MVNO coupled with gps (Hello Lojack). They also have an app for it that is very good. It's a very integrated solution being used to build a lot of things and uses very little power. There is also the ESP8266 / nodemcu that may be more at home with a China built bike. There is a good amount of development going on with it and it has web IDE as well. I've seen ESP8266 chips on breadboards go for around $1. |

i use a board called a picuino it has a port that accepts many bluetooth or 2.4 ghz wireless devices, even nrf2401 if your into the internet of things.
they are around $10 and tiny. maybey a third the size of an arduino uno. they can run on a button cell.. i use rasberrys for lots of things but its overkill for the stuff you mentioned. and lacks io once you add a screen or other boards to it.. that said there are gpio boards available.. it depends how far you want to go. i like to size the machine for the job at hand. but if your looking for a development platform for future mods then it makes more sense.. coding the rasberry is much more involved, where the arduino platform has many examples to gleen info from. c code is easy, i find myself using perl and python alot on the rasberry pi. |

Minor update as I haven't had much time to work on this. I got the board paired with my bluetooth helmet. I also got a few text to speech libraries working and was able to get a script to run that would play audio on the helmet. I also got a GPS module in but haven't hooked it up yet.
