SpeedoDRD Installation
Tuesday I received my SpeedoDRD from 12 O'Clock Labs, and I finished installing it on Wednesday.
12 O'Clock Labs offers a number of different models of the SpeedoDRD which are plug-and-play installations for a variety of different motorcycles. However, none of these different models employs the same 3-pin connector used by the Zongshen RX3. Therefore, I purchased the Universal Kit U1. http://shop.12oclocklabs.com/index.p...&product_id=59 After probing the 3 wires coming from the speedometer with my digital multimeter, I determined the following cofinguration. Black/Red Wire: Power from battery Brown/White Wire: Signal from Speed Sensor Green Wire: Ground To avoid cutting the main wiring harness, I decided to connect the SpeedoDRD to the wires coming from the speedometer speed sensor. Also, by removing the speed sensor, I could make secure mechanical and electrical connections by crimping and soldering the connections at my workbench. Therefore, I lofted the front wheel, and removed the speed sensor from the hub. Taking the speed sensor to my workbench, I cut all three wires about 2 inches from the plug end of the unit, and connected the SpeedoDRD using the following method. I connected the positive, Black/Red wire from the speed sensor to the Red wire of the SpeedoDRD. I connected the Green, ground wire from the speed sensor to the Black wire of the SpeedoDRD. I connected the Brown/White signal wire from the speed sensor to the White wire of the SpeedoDRD. I connected the Blue wire from the SpeedoDRD to the Brown/White wire going to the plug of the speed sensor.

Returning to the motorcycle, I replaced the speed sensor on the hub, and installed the front wheel. After lowering the front wheel, I routed the wire from the speed sensor back to the speedometer.
At this point, I decided to tidy up the wiring harness to make installation of the headlight easier. Therefore, I removed the three nuts holding the speedometer, and disconnected the plug from the wiring harness. Then I re-routed the wiring harness outside the headlight mount to make more room for the headlight. Since the speedometer was removed, I also decided to trim the power outlet panels to allow easier access to the mounting bolts for the windshield. Removing each of the panels, I trimmed the bottom of each with a cutting wheel on my Dremel tool. Then I re-installed the power outlets, and the speedometer.

Finally, I connected the speed sensor to the speedometer, and the plugs leading to the accessory power outlets.

Before re-installing the headlight, I turned on the ignition key, and tested the SpeedoDRD. The speedometer immediately received a signal from the SpeedoDRD, and the SpeedoDRD flashed the appropriate signals indicating a good installation.
Next, I programmed the SpeedoDRD for a negative 11.1% input to the speedometer, as shown in the following video.

So if you programmed it for a negative 11% that means that now have a speedo that is 4% faster than a gps and a odometer that is 6% slower ? |

I calibrated the SpeedoDRD with my Garmin GPS; it is very accurate.

I think I'm just going to use my GPS on Iron Butt rides for the mileage accuracy and roughly calculate a 10% optimistic speedo for everyday use. I'm used to that on my scooter. I could always install my old bike calculator, too. These speedometer recalibration strategies are more trouble than I'd care to get into. Thanks for all the R&D.

Hi All
An approximately 10% variation on speedos of all vehicles I've owned, or currently own seems roughly par for the course. According to my GPS, both my Mash & CF650T are ~10%out, but then, so is my Kia Ceed car, and my Ford Transit based motorhome. On the plus side, using the speedo, I'm far less likely to get a speeding ticket, so keeping my license clean, and my insurance costs as low as I can Cheers Tony |

I re-installed the windshield, and was pleased to note the mounting nuts near the power outlets were much easier to install. Then I re-installed the headlight, and it also installed much more easily without the wiring harness pushing on it from behind. Then I went for a test ride to check the accuracy of the speedometer compared to my Garmin GPS receiver.
I mounted the SpeedoDRD in a protected spot beneath the speedometer. However, I left enough slack in the wire so I can easily retrieve the unit to re-program it for corrections whenever I desire. After riding around a bit, I determined the initial setting was too 'pessimistic.' Therefore, I experimented some more, and finally configured the SpeedoDRD for a setting of negative 10.2%. This setting appears to be nearly perfect for my Kenda, K270 front tire.

I really like the SpeedoDRD; it is very well manufactured. It is easy to program, rugged, and waterproof. In fact you can run it while submersed in a glass of salt water.

I really enjoy having an accurate speedometer reading, especially with a digital speedometer. I can more easily compensate for an inaccurate analog speedometer, but I prefer to take a quick glance, and be able to trust the reading from a digital speedometer.
I am very pleased with my purchase of the SpeedoDRD, and I highly recommend it. I am happy I made this investment to improve the accuracy of both the speedometer, and the odometer of my Zongshen RX3.

I have added a link to this thread under the Modifications subheading in the Zongshen RX3 Sticky Thread, which is pinned to the top of this forum.

You can purchase the SpeedoDRD for a price of $70, delivered, from a variety of vendors on eBay, Amazon.com, et cetera. I purchased my SpeedoDRD directly from 12 O'Clock Labs, because Brooks offered me a money back guarantee if the unit did not work with the speedometer on my Zongshen RX3. Brooks graciously matched the $70, delivered price from the other vendors. I am pleased to report that 12 O'Clock Labs sells excellent products, and provides superb customer service.

Thank you, Huck. I didn't have any problems whatsoever with this installation. The SpeedoDRD works great with the speedometer of the Zongshen RX3.
