xb-31 white smoke.
I noticed when i first rev my bike after it sits for a min or two idleing i get a huge puff of white smoke out of the exhaust. Doesnt seem to be running lean , but i moved the carb needle to the middle location months ago . IT just started smoking in the last few weeks.. I also screwed the mixture screw out . Its seems to be lose tho . Any suggestions?

Stop messing with the mixture.
White smoke means it's burning coolant/water Blue smoke means it burning oil Black smoke means its buring fuel (too rich) keep in mind when it's cold out it's going to smoke a fair bit, it's just warm air hitting the cold air

Ok first thing (XB-31) what is it? Does the bike have a water cooled engine?
These are other causes of White smoke: White smoke could be Condensation building up in the exhaust overnight. If the vehicle is kept in a damp area this will happen. Also if ridden in wet areas this will happen the next day, if it's not dry when put away. If the vehicle is kept in a shed or garage with a dirt floor or shed with wood floor, this will happen. If the vehicle is kept in a garage with a concrete floor that wasn't sealed or sealed correctly when finished, this will happen. This will also happen if you wash it and get some water in the exhaust pipe while doing so. Like H.D. said, quit messing with stuff until we know all of the scenarios so we can help you.

Its the vx250 or xb31 which doesnt have coolant . Its smoke after it runs a few mins to an hour or 2 later so i doubt its condensation. Im going to change the oil, oil filter , fuel filter and see if that does anything.

Chances are it's blue smoke then (often mistaken for white) and smells like burning oil.
Is it a lot of smoke or just a little? Sounds like the rings are toast or it was over filled with oil

Does that model have an OHV or an OHC head? if OHC, it could be a worn/out-of-tolerance valve guide. Still a pain, but easier to deal with than a complete top-end/rings on a four-banger.

Yeah its been cold and raining the last couple times i rode. No it doesnt have Ohc and i did notice the smoke does have a blue tint. I did change the oil about a month ago and could be overfull if i didnt get all the old oil out . Still runs great just smokes when it idles and you hit the gas hard . Its like a nice size puff but stops smoking when your on the gas.

You probably
You may have been too tough on it breaking it in and riuned your valves.
Needless to say there is a reason to break it in slow, no full throttle and all that other stuff that is too late for you now of course. Hope everything works out for you though . Cheers, Kelly :( |

Well, I went full throttle within the first 5 miles of assembly. I still have no smoke or engine problems.
I think the overfilled oil may have been the problem. Allen

it was overfilled by about a half quart . Guess thats what happens when you try doing a oil change in 2 minutes . Just seems to smoke a little on start up now but stops after i take the choke offf.

Thats a good one !!!!
Wow, thats the funniest thing I have heard in a long time !!!!
" Well , I went full throttle the first five minutes of assembly " Kotaranger wrote ... and , " I opened mine up full throttle within a minute of it's first start and have run it hard ever since .... " Knothead wrote ... Now thats funny !!!!!! Kelly wrote and is writing !!! Lol , ha ha ha ah ha ahahhhh haaaaa, can't stop laughing at that !!!! That is the WORST thing you can do to new motor kiddies . Ever wonder why they only get one run out of a top fuel draggster ? Your bike "was" no different Kiddies . I say " was" because you just took ten years off your motor . Going to school enables you to read right ? Did you catch the sentence " During break-in do not allow engine to rev over 1/3 throttle for first few hours of break-in, then not over 2/3rds for the next 5 hours, then oil change , then slowly increase to full throttle during the next 10 hours of MILD riding ????? There aint an engine manufacturer, racer ( Not even drag racers do what you did ) , speed shop , mechanic , pig farmer that doesn't break in the motor ! At least drag racers KNOW that there engine is only getting 4.5 seconds out of its life. Alot like your kiddies new motors right ? Just remember to tell your potential buyer of your trashed and smoking ( if still running bike ) that you did NO break-in and you just wanted a bigger bike that is why I am seeling this pile of smoking trash !!! Lol !!! Ha ha ha ha ha ... "Now that's funny, I don't care who you are ", said Larry the Cable Guy !! Thanks you for your posts, this has been amuzing at least, I needed a good laugh today . My advice is to read a motor break-in book after kindi-garten class today . Full throttle to seat valves, now that is prescious ! That's a good one !!! Ha ah ah ah ha ha ha , thats funny ! You guys are the greatest, real comedians . Kelly , ASA certified engine machanic AMA motorcycle mechanic and rider for over ten years Small gas engine repair Voc Tech Certificate Rider and builder of mtorcycles all my life . Is that enough kiddies !!! Cheers, Kelly out |
