First oil change, filter cover stuck...
After hitting 100 miles it's time to change the oil. I pulled the drain plug (very tight!), and strainer covers (tight too). Problem is, the filter cover is stuck. I'm not one to start digging between the case/cover... is there a trick to it?

The filter cover is held in place by 2 nuts. 8mm I believe. Studs are attached to the engine and it's simply just removing the two nuts. Behind the cover is a spring which puts pressure on the filter to push it's o-ring seal into place. I'm amazed that they are that tight. I'm not sure of all the tricks for removing stuck items like that but maybe heating the nuts up or some penetrating oil?

I removed the two nuts, but the cover is in there pretty good. I see (tutorial) that there's an o-ring in there. I'm guessing it's pretty snug being new. I was looking to see if anyone had a trick that worked for them on their first oil change. I'm guessing a plastic wedge, or possibly channel locks griping the sides to walk it out (not a fan of that, but any port in a storm ;-) )

i would try tapping the edge of the cover with a rubber mallet. when you heat a rubber o ring and have it compressed, it can stick pretty tight... i see it all the time on john deere tractors... its worse if the o ring doesnt have lube on it when installed... usually a tap with a rubber mallet to the side of the cover will do the trick...

Light tap from the side with a drift,I agree.
Remember then the drain plug magnet attaches to top of filter and Pull it out. Also don't be too freaked out with fair amount of mushy metal on your magnet with the 1st change. |

Came off with a little persuasive action from a drift...
Now I have to find the right size oil filter... the KN I is to big. :( no one seems to know of a suitable substitute (local)

1st oil change at 100 miles I would just reuse filter and change next time.
It really is not necessary to replace filter with every oil change especially If you change frequently. I replace every other oil change. |

I agree with inroads ... check it good for any failures and then invest in some CSC filters or a few reusable filters.... I use the re-usable one and love it.

Inroads, I like the idea of reusing the paper filters if they can be so can you clarify what you mean by changing your oil frequently? I change mine every 2K or 2.5K miles. Would you reuse a filter with that info? Thanks much!

Haha, I think they're pretty zealous at the factory; my TT250 has a lot of tight bolts too. The drain plug took some surprising effort.

I spray mine clean with WD40 then low pressure air.....
JB I had the same thing happen to me...ended up with a double order.....
