Better air filter setup for dirt?
i just took my first look ever at my air filter. after getting it off i noticed that the whole intake tube was full of dirt. anyone know of a better filter i could use for the dirt? i'll change the whole box if needed.

Did you have grease between the filter and the air box? They make a special grease to seal that junction.
If your filter gets too dirty, the air will find another way in, so keep it clean! |

The air box is best for dirt riding. The relatively calm air inside allows larger particle to settle, rather than get stuck to the filter.
Here is a link to the grease. I am sure you can find other brands and prices. I like to spead a bit in the bottom of the air box to trap the dirt that falls there. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=knn-99-0704 |

Good idea. Is there a reason why regular automotive grease wouldn't work?

I don't see why it wouldn't. As long as it's nice thick stuff, it should seal nicely, in my opinion anyway.

but i have a feeling the standard "blue" or black axle grease would work pretty well for that. I dont know, i ripped my airbox off the first chance i could! (i don't ride off road a ton)

I wouldnt go with the blue or black grease, too thin. The old timey yellow or brown grease would probably do.
The important part is keeping the filter clean. |

i have a roketa so i just take the left side cover off, take the air box cover off and remove the two screws that hold the air filter in the box. i think my main problem is the actual seal itself. it looks bent pver in spots and not in others.

The seal is a joke on these bikes, the rubber is all bent at the box and trying to mount up to a rubber/foam gasket, it works but not that well, I'd go with a UNI or the equivalant, the stock box on these is just a BAD design, not the box itself, just the way they have the carb intake mounted to the box...Better off pulling the box out and go UNI/K&M or mod your own...

I ditched the stock airbox after seeing the poor fitting seal around the rubber intake tube and the box.The stuff just was not fitted properly and there was what looked like black rtv or some other goop they used to seal it.
Anyway there was a chance of dirt getting in thru past the filter so I just decided to go with a K&N and it fits perfect. I wanted to use a UNI but wasnt comfortable about getting the right size. I'm putting a different engine in that came with a 30mm carb the say which measures 42mm at the most across the outside and the K&N rc-1120 fit perfect. slightly snug to slide it on so with the clamp tight it will be perfect. |

i couldn't ever bring myself to put a K&N on anything that i know would ever see any dirt. i have a K&N on my car and i have to constantly clean the throttle body, intercooler, turbo compressor housing etc.
