Aftermarket CDI for Templar 250 fail. Help..?
So.. I bought an aftermarket CDI to disable the rev limiter and also increase the ignition timming. I bought the correct one for DC but somehow when I plugged it in and went to turn on the bike there was no power to anything so I found it popped the thin red wire fuse by the battery!! The crazy part is that it popped the fuse even though the bike ignition and everything was switched off! This does not make any sense.
Apparently one of the CDI wires in the harness must cross a power wire with a ground. If I can find what one I can probably rewire or disconnect the wire that is causing the problem. I know it's a longshot but anyone have any ideas on what wire could be causing the problem and how to fix it? |

All the wire colors match up except for like 2 on the bike are black but the CDI has a different color for both. I guess that is where the issue is but how do I fix it?

Put the stock cdi back in and send back the new cdi. I never had any luck with them. I was sent the wrong type cdi several times before I received the correct one only to find out the bike ran better with stock.

I found an adjustable CDI unit that worked for me, and posted it in the Templar Resource guide sticky (post #9). It includes a video. Here it is:
https://www.chinariders.net/showpost...35&postcount=9 I have the AC CDI in my 5 speed Templar X (first gen), but my 6 speed had a DC CDI. Testing to figure out which you have is described in this post. Advance keys are FIXED, and advance at idle (kick back). But my AC CDI has no advance at idle. It starts easy. I think most electronic CDI units do this. Advance is based on frequency of trigger (rpm), so it can be advanced on a curve based on rpm. I imagine that you got the right kind (DC), but you can verify that the (original) CDI is getting 12V when you turn on the ignition. This probably doesn't explain the shorting out though. Maybe you got a faulty unit. Can you use a multimeter (ohmeter mode) to check which wires connect to the housing (grounded)??
