That's very good information. If I understand it correctly, 14.1VDC is enough to maintain a charge without boiling and 14.5VDC will produce slight boiling that can be maintained for a few hours without boiling dry.
What I don't understand is how to connect the variable resistor to the precision resistors. Is he saying to bridge the resistors, or solder only to one resistor? The picture is difficult to see for me. I have an old switching power supply that I could use for this purpose.

Also, is he saying that after finding the correct resistance, he simply soldered a 4.7K resistor in place?

To 1 resistor ONLY. Electronic hobbyist forum & http://www.alldatasheet.com/ had good infos.
Saliva trick was 1st mentioned in http://bbs.mydigit.cn. Home of those nuts that had plenty toys & NEVER pay the "proper" ($$$) power supply.
