Templar 250 (Base) Gearing
Hi all,
The base Templar 250 with the overhead cam engine comes with 13/47 gearing stock. I know on my former Templar X i changed the rear down from 49 to 42 so it would handle faster roads better. Whats the consensus for the base Templar as far as gearing, 42 or 40? which will get it close to 65-70mph while still having enough low-end torque for trail riding? P.S. i bought and planned to install a 14T instead but it wont fit, and its the area around the sprocket that would need to be shaved instead of just the cover and its not advisable.. Thanks

I'm running 13/40 on mine and have been riding mainly pavement and forest service roads. The rear 40 gives a comfortable 55-60mph cruise for me without feeling the rpm's are too high for an extended ride. Once I hit 65mph I feel the rpm's are too high to keep it there for multiple miles. Once I hit off road, 1st gear feels tall but works for non technical single track. Steep/rougher single track would probably be a problem. For me, the 40 rear is a happy medium between road and trail. I avoid interstates on the Templar. It's just too light and the wind blows it around too much to feel safe; just me though, I'm old.

Thanks.. im ordering the 40T based on that info. I had the 42 on the Temp X but it came with 49T, assuming 13/47 with 5peed equals same top speed as 13/49 with 6 speed, then the 40T rear on our 5 speeds should be the sweet spot
