an old school american atv with a taiwan engine...........
I bought a nasty, rough as can be POLARIS 250 trailBOSS (4x4) that is missing many bolts/parts.
On the plus side I did just hear it run if only for a few seconds as it ran out of ether/WD40 . It is electric start with a pull cord backup. This thing is very old (mid to late 80's) and is a 2-stroker with a seperate F/R gearbox and all chain drive with front strut suspension. From my understanding these were built in the states (I could be wrong) way back when and it looks somewhat garage built/garden tractor built. I'm not totally sure what I'll do with this one either but I'd like to get it back to 4WD. I thought about yanking the 2-stroker and putting in a 4-stroke 200-250cc chinese engine. I have pics if there is any interest. |

Heres a few that I took of certain area's but I'll put up 1 or 2 of the whole bike soon.
I like the U-bolts holding the front drive jack-shaft for the 4WD. Looks like I could run right to the hardeware store for one if I needed to. This thing needs help just about everywhere on it, if it's not missing its bent/broken/worn out. The vin is barely readable and it is not a 17 digit vin so registering it will either be very easy or impossible. The vin and registering it will determine what I will do with it for the most part. Looking at it and the wide engine setup they have in it I can see that a very wide engine could be slipped into it something like a rd350 maybe or bigger but the suspension isnt up to much of a wild ride IMO. |

I had a Honda Oddessy with a drive line like that. Just give it the gas and go. The RPMs stay up in the powerband of the 2 stroke. If you do a motor swap, try to get one with reverse. Although I think I would at least explore whats needed on the 2 smoke.

Yeah that drive system would work well as long as it stays out of the mud I suppose but the cover is all messed up on it right now.
Its basically the same as a snowmobiles (CVT) drive system though. The gearbox is seperate from the engine and it might be adaptable to use or just get a chinese ATV engine with the reverse built into it and then add a simple jackshaft to allow 4WD. Chain drive from the china engine to a jackshaft (short chain- ) that would have a drive sprocket going forward and one back to the rear axle with the only hard part being the correct ratio's but that could be worked out. Her's some pics and it shows the extent of use someone put on it with the ugly stick. |

I believe that they were built in the plant in Plymouth, MN. My Dad service's the nail guns for the crates they pack the snowmobikes in at the plant in Iowa.
I don't think they build the ATVs there. The pwc's are built in MN. Anyway. I would skip trying to get that 2 stoke in operating condition and go with a china built powerplant. The reverse idea a good one too. Allen

Yes... Polaris is an American company... They are made in Northern America... Canada to be exact. {No pun intended}
The engines are all made by Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan. Remember this early on Fuji/Robin/Subaru? as I mentioned in early posts here and in other forums. Fuji is one of the largest manufactures of engines in Japan. They have been making engines for way over 40 years. They helped Bridgestone, Kawasaki, Honda, Hodaka, and made engines for Alsport\Steen, Chaparral, Kami, Rupp, Italian made Indian's, and many more bikes. They are still making Polaris engines over 90cc, Everything 90cc and under are made in Taiwan.

Yep.
I was wondering if you had seen this posting. I wish mine looked half as good as yours....mine is a rag but still an interesting machine to me. I am going to try to find the needed driveline parts for it and hopefully get it rideable at some point but it will take some doing and I hope to actually find another one to speed up the whole process. |

Mine's coming along, I've been busy so I haven't had much time to work on it. The plastics have all been repainted with Krylon Fusion and all the racks and footrests etc. are all flat black. I recovered the seat, not the best job but serviceable. A few more pieces and I'll be up and running.
