GY 200 Dirt Bike - Parts & Questions
My son just bought a used GY 200 enduro dirt bike. It has marking that say SLD and Super moto. The guy we bought it from said it was a 2011 but VIN Searches seem to suggest it is actually a 2008.
LWGYCML118A000794 - the 10th character is an 8. This site says that an 8 in this position is for year 2008. http://support.alldata.com/alldata-r...-to-year-chart Running the vin I found this: Manufacturer Name: Chongqing Huansong Industries Group Co Address: Shiyan Industrial Park Zip / Country / Phone: 400052 China Product Type: Motorcycle We have a couple of questions: 1. Where is a good place to buy parts for this bike? 2. What is the American-sold equivalent for this bike? 3. The bike is makes a grinding sound when the starter is engaged but the bike starts fine. I'm guessing this has something to do with the flywheel or starter gears. Any thoughts? 4. The bike is low on oil. The tag on the bike says it takes JW 30 oil. What is the US equivalent for this oil? I have attached some pics. Thanks so much for the assistance! |

Welcome; we are glad you joined us.
Your bike has a clone of a Honda engine. EBay is a good source for parts. You might also try Hooper Imports. http://www.hooperimports.com/ Any good motor oil will work well in your motorcycle. The most important factor is to change the engine oil regularly. I really like the 15W/40, commercial, diesel motor oils. there was no real Honda these were based on as far as bikes, and as far as engines go, I believe they are based on Hondas we never got in the US--however, they are referred to as 'Hondanoid' meaning none of the internal parts interchange with anything really and truly 'Honda' so they might be altered Hondas. I have never seen anyone chime in from other countries saying the engine is an exact or near copy of the Honda ________ we had here in ______________ back in the early 80's. On the contrary, Spud's Zongshen's engine (unique to that particular Chinese bike and only that model) is based on a Yamaha and will exchange parts with 'real' Yamaha 200's (as seen in the TW200 and whatever other model they used that engine in their 'real' Yamahas. Same with the Qingqi based bikes being based on Suzukis (Qlink and SSR); I understand the Qlink 200 and the SSR 200 have many engine parts interchangeable with DR200 engines.
Some of the parts, like the frames and the wheels, are based on older Honda models like the XL185 of 1979 and thereabouts. So, for instance, there are a multitude of aftermarket sprockets for the rear wheel. I cannot remember exactly which counter-sprocket these use, but they are Honda-based as well. Ideally, a 44 or 46 tooth sprocket in the rear and a 16 in the front will keep the revs down and spread out the gears so that you won't be trying to shift to 6th gear where there is none!

That bike was also sold as a Roketa and a Shineray. The frame is nearly identical to an '80 to '83 Honda XR200 (not the R version), except that they removed the twin shocks and added a mono shock. In fact, I'm in the process of converting one to a twin shock as a café racer. I can't see the engine clearly, but my guess is that it is a pushrod motor (my favourite), which is cloned from a Honda CG1225. Our Chinese friends bored and stroked it to 200cc. eBay is a good source for parts. Keep your search terms generic, like "dirt bike starter", and you'll likely find one for cheap. Your starter is likely done, BTW. X2 on Spud's 15W40 diesel oil recommendation.

Thanks culcune, weldangrind, and humanbeing for you responses.
Weldangrind - if I search eBay using 'dirt bike starter' how will I know which starter will fit this bike? Also, you said my starter is 'likely done' so do you think the starter is going out. Think it could be a problem with the flywheel? The grind is intermittent. Sometimes when you engage the starter there's no grind. Then the next time you get that awful grind. This makes me wonder if there are teeth missing in one of the gears. Trying to figure out if it's the starter or something the starter is engaging with. Any thoughts?? humanbeing - my bike says GY200. Is that the same as a CG200? Also if the motor is an 11T are there different models depending on year and any other factors? Thanks! |

If you choose to buy through Taobao (which is much like eBay), we can guide you from there. Please show us a close-up of the motor, so we can confirm which type it is.

So would GY2 stand for 200 cc or is the GY2-7 more of a China model designation which would change depending on the year. For example GY2 is 2008 and 09 but GY3 would be 2010 or something. Here are pics of the motor. Let me know if you can provide more information on which parts will fit based on what you can determine based on the motor. |

More likely than the starter itself being bad is a problem with the reduction gears. Before ordering parts you should pull the cover off the reduction gear housing and have a good look. May just be a lack of grease or possibly a needle bearing or bushing.
BTW: I like the engine description on the sticker "liquid cooled". |

Thanks Mudflap. Is the reduction gear housing on the kickstarter side of the motor or the other side of the motor? Can you provide any more details to help me determine where to look?
Yes, I laughed when I saw 'liquid cooled' as well since there's no radiator on the bike!! Thanks!! |

There should be a round, usually chrome, cover on the side opposite the kick starter, held on by 3 small bolts. Reduction gears are under the cover and can be removed easily for examination.

That is a common pushrod 200cc hondoid. GY2 is the type of bike. The most common of the imported to US dual sports.
I search "200cc dirt bike starter" Here is an 11 tooth. I also saw a 9 tooth. Not necessarily the best price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/starter-moto...f89793&vxp=mtr
