Clutch Service Life
On average, at how many miles does the clutch need replaced? If you've had to do it, please describe the way the bike was used before it needed replacing.

Pretty much never with these, depending on how it was used (loading, slipping, style of riding), if used gently, until you run out of adjustment on a new cable, I could easily imagine 40-50k miles.

Of course, a crappy clutch is always a possibility, but assuming it's decent to begin with how long a clutch lasts depends greatly on the operator. Right out of college my sister and I bought identical Toyotas. She had hers 3 years and in that time needed three new clutches; I had mine 12 years and sold it with the original, still-working-just-fine clutch in it.

In my imagination, I figure people who gear up their bike by changing the front sprocket to enable higher top speed are going to go through more clutches.

Nah! 5 year old Hawk with well over 8000 miles and still stock clutch. Normal driving will not kill the clutch. Tying to pop wheelies and dogging it every time you take off with even stock gearing will wear it out.
