Hawk Brake Pads
Hi All, If I was researching new (not stock) brake pads for a Hawk DLX, what manufacturer would I use in the search? My front brakes are OK (about the same as the drum brakes on my '62 BMW), but I would like to make them a bit better.

There are some off the shelf options that you can use. I have the part numbers listed in the resource guide. I ended up ordering some sintered metallic pads from china through taobao (could probably find them on Aliexpress) for a very cheap price, and so far I have been very pleased with them.
The stock pads are a very mild organic compound, so they give up a lot of bite for longer disc life. The sintered pads will eat away the discs a little faster, but they do grab and bite much harder/sharper. It was a very good upgrade for me. You can also go for a quality pad like EBC. These would work for the front. https://www.ebay.com/itm/EBC-Rear-HH...AAAOSw9R1fdJYD These would be the rear. https://www.ebay.com/itm/EBC-Brake-P...kAAOSwKQNfOYec You can also get the HH sintered for the rear if you want to match the compounds exactly. They would ship from the UK though,

Thanks Megadan. I did read your resource guide a couple of times when I set up the Hawk DLX last week, but I completely missed the EBC brake pad numbers at the end of the guide - those are the numbers I was looking for. Faster disk wear is not a big deal to me in order to get better braking. I'm also looking into ordering a stainless brake line for the front brakes.
One thing I haven't noticed mentioning anywhere, including the setup video from the manufacturer, is to thoroughly clean the disk rotors before using the brakes. Mine had black paint splattered on them along with some kind of brown goo that was pretty difficult to remove. That stuff wouldn't be very good for the brake pads. |
