What are those cylinder mounts for?

Howdy.Working on an engine swap and this forum has been very helpful. It's going well but I can't find what these are designed for:

In case the image does not show I'm talking about those knuckle like mounting points on the rear of Chinese 250cc engines.

Seems oddly specific. Why are they shaped that way? Is there something that fits in the middle?

A photo would help, but these engines are installed in various applications, includine dirtbikes, road bikes, ATV, UTV, and who knows what else. Alternative mounting positions can be recruited.
