Need help In Ma.

Hi, my name is JB French and I’m from Ma. I recently bought an X Pro Templar X and I tried to register it and was told it can’t be done by the registry. I have an MCO that states MOTORCYCLE but was still told it can’t be registered. Does anyone have any advice? I was told that this company is not listed as legally being able to sell roadworthy bikes in the US and can’t be registered in any state legally. Obviously lots of people have registered these bikes in other states. Has anyone registered one in Ma? There must be a way. I’m not ready to give up yet. Does anyone have any info that might help me get this done? Between the bike and all of the aftermarket upgrades I’ve bought for it I’ve got three grand into this bike and I really need to get it registered. The reason I went ahead with the Templar X is I saw one in Ma.that was plated. How that person got it done I don’t know. The registry and title division tells me No. I’m wondering if maybe the states computer system just hasn’t been updated w info that lists them as able to be plated for street use? Please help!

I bought the Templar M and while I didn't register it, I was able to get a title for it as I wasn't sure if I was going to put it on the road or not.

I started the title/registration forum online and selected Zongshen as the brand as X-pro wasn't on there and Zuumar stated Moped.

It's kinda odd that they told you the company can't sell them because they aren't roadworthy as you can make a normal dirt bike street legal and register it or make a custom motorcycle.

The Templar X has all required features to be certified road legal, including DOT approved wheels and tires. I have titled, registered and plated TWO of them in the State of Missouri. There was no problem at all. State sale tax is paid upon registration (~8% of $1850).

To register and plate in Missouri, you need liability insurance, receipts for your prior two years showing that you are up to date on yor persoanl property taxes, a bill of sale for new vehicles (signed over title for secondary sales serves as BOS in this State), and the MCO stating "motorcycle" in the vehicle type field. They did not care that the VIN did not show up as valid in their system since I had everything else including insurance.

I have used Geico, which cost me about $36 per year for liability only to add it to my existing policy. It has gone up to about $45, I think.

MA does require motorcycle endorsment to ride it on the streets, but not sure if they need that for registration (chicken/egg problem).

Massachusetts has a motorcycle inspection method for certifying a motorcycle that is not in the VIN list. You can ask a state Trooper about the inspection program, or ask at the motor vehicle registration office. Apparently, you must get it registered and title immediately upon purchase (for off-road use), THEN get the inspection. Once you have the inspection report, you can take that to the motor vehicle /title office and get it plated. Here is a guide:

Don't people build custom motorcycles and cars in Massachusetts and get them inspected, and registered for street use?

This is JB French, the one who made the original post. I spoke to the manager of the Title division and he insisted there would be no way for me to register this bike for street use, because the manufacturer was not on the list that met NHTSA (or something similar) guidelines. I told him there were thousands of these bikes registered for road use all over the country, and he said all he knew was in Ma, it couldn’t be done. I still don’t feel confident that is the truth, but I needed to register the bike, so I went through a company called Dirt Legal and paid 500$ to have it registered in Montana to an LLC in my name. Sounds shady as hell but apparently legal. I had over 3 grand into the bike after doing many mods and upgrades. I needed to make it legal. If anyone has registered one, in Ma. Please post how you were able to do it. From what the Title division of registery told me the manufacturer must already be on THEIR list. He insisted he could not add them to it.

In SC they had to get someone at the main DMV office (at the capitol?) to add "Zuma" to their official manufacturer list. Days later I was able to get titled. I thought it was supposed to be "Zuumav" but since I had already gone a few rounds with them and was seeing light at the end of the tunnel I didn't argue that one. Where they got "Zuma" I don't know, I thought that was some sissy wine drink in the 1990's. But it's possible they might have their I's dotted wrong or something in MA too.

No real help for you but I do know RV people often do Montana LLC's. Pretty sure in their case it's to just duck expensive state property taxes more than anything.

A number of DMV's when confronted with something odd that was legally tagged in another state feel they need to go above and beyond to make it work in THEIR state too. Also over the years I've run into DMV people who are just full of nope and not willing to even make an effort. It's well worth trying another office. And maybe mention possible various spellings of the manufacturer?
