Making the right

Well I've done some of the mods to hawk led lights in the cluster and tail/brake light.
I switched out the 15 tooth front sprocket to the 17 tooth sprocket ,the Mikuni carb is on its way Its in VAVA'U , TONGA in the middle of the south pacific and tonight I am going to rip the cat out of the exhaust . Oh and already have the jet kit for the Mikuni |
|
can't beat that color!
|
I got the same carb on the way from Tonga! Im pissed that Amazon didn't disclose the amount of time it would take to arrive.
Is there a way to remove the cat without having to cut and reweld the pipe? Im having problems finding someone that will Tig weld for cheap since its alum. |

Yep, not aluminum, and find a welding shop that has a heli-arc outfit. Nothing else will weld this low carbon crap (not proper welds, anyway).

I made me a motorcycle jack out of a old scissors jack that had been sitting in the garage for years it was the only thing left that was any good after a 15yr old kid stole my ranger and made it two feet shorter lol.

I have the VM26 Mikuni carburetor on the hawk now 110 main jet middle needle position
1 1/2 on the mixture screw what a difference no more riding around half choked . It starts and idles on full choke for 30 seconds then to half choke for about a minute then your off and riding . I still have the exhaust pop when decelerating but I think that's because the cat is still in the header pipe and is probably igniting the un-burned fuel. Also changed out the rear knobby for a Shinko 700 4.60-18 it doesn't feel like i'm riding down railroad tracks anymore :yay:much smoother on the street . |

I finely cut into the catalytic converter and pulled it out it was a bit of a pain but not too bad
I cut it open with a body grinder with a cut off wheel on it which made a rather wide cut and that made welding it back up a little ruff but i got it sealed backup, if I was to do it again and i'm not I would have made the side cuts with a hack saw thinner cut I'm not going to show the welds pretty ugly lol . I used a hole saw on a drill press to cut through material that made it pretty ez to remove the cat. I also cut the cap off the spark arrester while I was at it. The bike seems to run smoother and has a little more power. |

Definitely up the pilot size a little. They come with a 20, which on a completely stock bike will work but is a bit on the lean side. It took about 2 turns on the idle mixture for mine to idle right, but had a lit of part throttle hesitation. 30 solved almost all of that. A 35 is a touch too big, but would probably be good with intake and exhaust mods.
|
Thanks for the heads up Dan I will give it a shot, I didn't want to do any more changes until I pulled out the catalytic converter
|
For the record, a Keihin needs a 40 or 42 slow jet. 30 works good in my Mikuni and my first attempt on the Keihin I just purchased was a 42 which puts the idle mixture screw at 1 turn out. Note: the Keihin I purchased came with what appears to be a 38 (in Keihin sizing). It was unmarked, but, I determined it to be the same size as the 38 Keihin in my kit.
|
A 27.5 might also be a good size to try, and many people have had good luck with it. My bike is a hair on the fat side, but I did that intentionally. Very dark brown plug color, so it's not sooty rich, but any further and it will be. The 30 Mikuni pilot on a completely stock bike is honestly a smidge too big, and is roughly close to that 42 Keihin pilot size. It took a tiny bit more than 1 turn out on my mixture screw to get a good steady idle. Since you are, I am assuming, probably closer to sea level than I am, it should be just about right. I am at 1000ft elevation.
I wouldn't be too worried about the cat. I've been running a 30 pilot, 110 main, and set needle since day 1 on my bike. Not had one problem in over 600 miles now, aside from the catalytic converter getting so hot that it has started to boil the fuel in the bowl if it sat too long, and from what I understand that happens on completely untuned bikes sometimes. That cat radiates a ton of heat. |
Do you have any links to where I can find the pilot jets for the vm26 clone 30mm carb the $35 one?
Or could I just drill out the stock #20 size ? |
You can get them here, or search that jet style, VM28/486 and find countless options.

I finally got the 27.5 pilot jet install with the 110 main jet, 1 1\4 turns on the mixture screw.
It runs much smoother no more shutter at low throttle and the exhaust pop is gone. The idle seems to float around a bit now though so I need to do some slight adjustments. After that I took it on a 25 mile ride out in the country and around Mogadore lake it definitely runs smoother and my cruising speed is around 50 MPH where before it was around 45 at the same throttle. How about some pictures! |

Here in Akron we are about 1004ft above sea level. |
Glad to hear it is much better behaved. The idle will take a little fine tuning like you said, I also stepped down to a 27.5 pilot, and it took just a bit more than 1 turn out on the mixture screw to find a steady idle.
Have you done a plug chop on that 110 main yet? Being at the same altitude I am It may be a bit on the rich side for a completely stock bike. |
Rideon if you dont mind me asking where abouts are you in Ohio ?I'm near Akron Canton area.
|
I live in Akron in the ellet area
|
Not yet Dan I'm going to try that tomorrow and see where I'm at.
