That pit bike looks like a lot of fun!
|
Those are a blast to ride. Son of Weldangrind's second bike was very similar.
|
Looks like a lot of fun.
I'd pick one up to keep at the airport to buzz around visit friends and cause general havoc. |
I have been mulling over picking one of the ‘bargain basement' pit bikes available here in the US from SSR. For my son, but he will have to wait until I get off it.
|
I changed the wheels from 14" / 12" to 17"/ 14" as Son of Weldangrind grew, and he rode it until he hit six feet. It had the typical China bike issues, including poor swingarm bushings, which I replaced with Honda stuff. It was a really fun and reliable little bike, once it was dialed in.
|
O well missed out on the one I was bidding on...
So I got peed off..& went and bought a new one still in the box.... Ok heading off out the door armed with a few spanners.... |
It's not to bad... "for the prise"
but it's NOT with out it's issues... steering head is either to tight or no grease... Prob a bit of both.. right foot peg sits on a forward faceing angle... rear brake lever sits above the foot peg & has no hight adjustment.. only 2 front mudguard "fender" bolts line up with the holes in the bottom yoke.. THE CHAIN IS TO SHORT... won"t let the swing arm swing through it full stroke.. guess I have a bit of work ahead of me to get it rideable... PS.... What size is the chain on these, theres no markings on the chain...... 420 or 428??? . |
Mostly usual stuff, except the short chain, that's a new one on me...
Every CB I've had so far used a 428, although YMMV... Where are the pics for crying out loud?? LOL! |
X2 on 428. I actually changed the chain to 420 on Son of Weldagrind's bike when I regeared it. The reason was that I had more selection in the 420 size, and I needed to slow my fearless 12 yo down. All he wanted to do was run WOT.
Are you going to be able to manipulate the brake lever? |
Quote:
of the foot peg bar... i will weld a small plate to the brake lever tapped for a 6mm bolt /lock nut... to give adjustment to the hight it sits at... will cut the foot peg mount plate of at the same time & realine it... Ps... almost need to strip the frame , grind the welds out & reweld it.. Pss... The stand is a bit to long... to easy for it to fall over on uneven ground... all this is bringing back memorys of the dam Shineray 200... PICS... will try..but I bought a house in the middle of almost nowhere... internet is sloooooooooow it times out trying to up load sometimes.. . |

I'd love to see pics of your new place, if you have time. Perhaps my adventures with a pit bike will help you: http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=10022 |
Caleb had his first play on the new toy 2day...
Didn't take him long to get to grips with a manual clutch.. now it's just rideing time.. It went well... Apart from every now and then the chain would jump a few teeth on the front sprocket... played with chain tension but did help.... I took the side cover off.... The 13 tooth front sprocket is to small .. the 2 retaining bolts are 2 close to the teeth & the chain rides on them lifting it of the sprocket letting it slip.. So have ordered a 15 tooth front & 48 tooth rear... Should put the gearing just slightly lower than the 13/41 it has by 1 tooth... got to shorten the stand..to long , the bike keeps falling over... And its dam hard motor to find nutural in... hopeing that will sort it self as the gear box losens up... He's only realy used 1st gear so far.. We will get this little chinese shitter sorted... Motor goes real well .. took 3 kicks to get it started from new... http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/...1/SAM_0168.jpg http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/...1/SAM_0165.jpg |
I'm glad to see Caleb is riding. Thanks for posting the great photos. :)
|
Terrific pics!
Son of Weldangrind had the same bike, and I actually changed the front sprocket to a 12 tooth. The secret was to swap to stainless socket head cap screws, which gave the chain the clearance it needed. |
Neutral was a bear in my son's bike as well. Good quality synthetic oil helped a bit.

I have ordered new sprockets.... but I had a thought... replace the retaining plate/bolts with a circlip... |
when you go from 13/41 to 15/48 you will certainly need a longer chain. thats a big jump!

The dam little chinese shitter tossed the chain... broke the side case & broke the pick up
off the stator plate.. New stator plate/coils/pick up.. only worth $26nz.. At least the parts are worth almost nothing for these things.. . |
Exactly the reason that I toss China chains in the bin. I usually use an RK or a DID.
Is your Son ok? |

May have been my falt...... The chain tention works oppisite to a real bike... As the suspesion compresses the chain gets loser... Not tighter as on ever other bike I have had... May have had to much free play in it to start with.. Have also ordered a chain guide for it.. |
This dam little @#$&*% still tosses it chain...
looks like I will have to move the swing arm pivot up about 40mm to cure the issue... Which is in fact quite easy to do with the way the arm is mounted... But first I'm going to try a trick we used on the speedway TQ midget years ago.... A nylon disc bolted on each side of the sprocket that sits 25mm higher... to guide the chain onto the sprocket... In 4 years of raceing I never tossed a chain after putting them on... But other than the chain... it's not a bad little bike for the $... |
I wonder what the difference is with your model. My son's 125 never tossed the chain.

Prise ? |
Ours was definitely bottom shelf. We paid too much at $800.00 Canadian out of the box. Last year, I saw the big wheel version for $400.00.
The basic platform was ok, but the welds, bearings, seals, chain and sprockets were junk. After I replaced those and took the time to set it up, it was a reliable little machine. |
This one cost $895NZ... The cheapest yer can get here for the BW version..
like your's its ok apart from this dam chain issue... once thats sorted it should quite relieable.. |
bolted a nylon guide disc each side of the sprocket.... 2 days riding with out tossing a chain...
|
I got thinking about Caleb's bike over the weekend, and I think that we were also having some chain issues in the beginning. The only repair I completed that would have corrected it was to replace the swingarm bushings with Honda parts.
I didn't start a thread on it, but I remember taking the old bushings to Honda, and the guy matched them for me. Good job that he keeps all of the bushings in one box. I paid less than $10 per bushing, and it made all the difference in the swingarm. |
It has rubber bushes in the swing arm pivot... i will look at the honda brearings...
I am going to strip it down soon & move the swing arm pivot up 30mm which is easy to do... make a new spacer tube , drill 2 holes & put the tube though and weld it there.. I have looked at pics of a few of the higher prised pitbikes they mount the arm higher up.. that will make the chain tighten instead of lossen as the arm swings up.. I might also cut the frame just back from the steering head & add 50mm , 2" into it..As I see there is a 2" longer version frame... longer frame would be better as caleb grows.. It also need a new shock... The spring seems to have compressed " to short for the shock now" An't chinese bikes just so much fun.... PS.... also needs a steering stop that dosn't bend every time it's droped.. |
I just can't help myself...
If theres a bike in the shed i just have to play with it... Ordered a set of USD forks & a internal rotor ignition unit for Calebs bike... I like this bike... parts are just so dam cheap.... even a alloy frame is worth almost nothing... Still need a rear shock.... might see if I can mod the mounts to take a jap shock... as yer just don't know if these so called trick pit bike shocks are any good.... It must be hard for him to ride as its just riding on springs no damping in either end... Pete |
I'm sure that Caleb is made of rubber, like most fearless boys his age.
Looking forward to the USD fork install. |
the forks arrived...
How much oil do the pit bike usd forks take ?... anyone have a idea... damping a bit fast on the return stroke.. like to put a thicker oil in... also have a internal rotor ignition unit to go in.. I got the chain de-railing sorted... nylon guide discs each side of the rear sprocket... not tossed the chain since I put them on... |
No idea. How much oil came out?
|

i will see... |
well I just cut the frame into a couple of bits...
going to lengthen the wheel base 75mm... Also thinking of cutting it just above the main engine mount to lower the motor & get the foot pegs 50mm lower aswell as put the swing arm on less angle... Basicly make the whole bike a bit bigger... pete. . |
You're re-engineering the whole bike!
|
Quote:
Have only gone for 55mm longer other wise the steering head would be way out in front of the tank... look really silly.. |
all back togeather... and the wheels are now in line...
should be a lot better to ride... they were almost half a tire out of alinement.. front was 35/40mm to the left of the rear.. Lifan motors are good... the rest of the bike is PURE crap... How the little shits can sleep at night putting crap like this on the market I will never know.. |
I agree, but the low quality is reflected in the price. There's no way you could get close to that price for a new Honda.
As you say, the motors are good, and guys like us fix everything else. Got pics? |
