rode a CT90 today......NOW with my S90 / CT90 build thread

Its a 71 CT90 and it is rough but I got it fired up today and rode it around for a few minutes then went to work on my toolbox tote.

SpeedSouth 04-13-2009 12:15 PM

CT What?

Not me. The CT 90 was my very first bike. It helped a little that my grandfather had one (slightly newer than mine) I learned to ride first.

I always wanted the 110 model...or a clutch. My friends had real dirt bikes, so I was never happy.

Here's a little tip...if you rev it up and drop it into gear to pop the front wheel, it will eventually sling the chain and bust the case. 8O

Don't ask me how I know.

Have fun with yours. They are great machines for what they are.
I wish I had appreciated what it was, instead of being focused what it wasn't, but such is life.

TeamCheap 04-13-2009 06:46 PM

No wheelies just putting around, we just want it for a moped and I have a S90 that needs a lot of work but should be fun also.

I did forget how much fun an auto clutch could be though  the last one a rode/owned was my honda 50 when a was just a little nipper.

Both bikes will be getting a 50cc 4-speed auto engine ASAP I have the engines just need all the other stuff for them.

katoranger 04-15-2009 01:45 PM

TC, I haven't forgotten about those parts.

Thats good to hear I'm going to need parts. :)

It still amazes me how that tired old honda engine fires up on the first kick even when it is fairly cold.I didnt even clean the carb on it i just got a spark and added some fuel, oh yeah the 6volt lantern battery made a hugh difference in starting it.

katoranger 04-22-2009 10:20 AM

I'm back. I will try to get some pics for you.

I had a CT90 purchased used at a yard sale for $55 back in 1988. I rode that thing for many years and it would get up to around 50mph on the highway. I sold it about 5 years ago for $300 after it had been sitting in my garage for many years. Those things run forever....

phil 04-22-2009 06:27 PM

i like the ct 90 i wouldnt mind having one i like the idea of the high and low range did all of them have that

TeamCheap 04-22-2009 08:22 PM

I think they discontinued it for a year but caught to much flak and put it back on.
It is geared really low when engaged and would be good for off road in some hilly area's but overall I doubt we'll ever need it.

I plan on just having a chinese 50cc engine on ours with what is supposed to be a 4-speed auto trans but I think it is a 3 but havnt cared to check it out since it wont matter in the long run. :)

I think I'll do some more work on it this weekend and run it around a bit with the tired old 90cc engine thats in it.

I think it looks better than the plastic mopeds running around.

Cal25 04-22-2009 11:53 PM

I bought a CL70 I think back in the '70s for fifty bucks. The guy that sold it to me drove it till he got a a license for a car and no longer wanted it. Licensed and inspected and even had all the blinkers.
I rode it for several months till I got a real bike and then sold it to another friend for fifty. It changed hands a few more times each time for fifty bucks till we lost track of it. Only one like it I have ever seen. More of a street bike but a tiny motor on it.

The CT90's were very popular back then and always fetched a good price.

TeamCheap 04-23-2009 05:46 AM

A well kept or restored ct90 can bring in over a grand now which just amazes me.

I dont plan on restoring the one I have to original (to expensive to do) I just want a fun, reliable moped to hop on and go whenever I feel like it.
The dualsports are fun but I hate the helmets and the faster pace, sometimes I just like to putt around.

TeamCheap 04-24-2009 08:23 PM

Ohh I was out working on the ToolTote and decided to snap a picture of our old worn out rough CT90.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0013-7.jpg
And no this engine does not have the gear reduction but we dont need it.

Carefull on the small bikes TC, Those are the ones that hurt ya and make ya look foolish in front of friends  Trust me I know

TeamCheap 04-25-2009 04:37 AM

Yeah I'll watch it as I can see just how easy it is to get a bit over confident on it.(that thing is so much fun)

I was running a mini urban trials course in my yard on friday. :)
No rocks, hills or logs just buildings, cars, trailers and fences. The hairpin left turn around the saw horses at the shed was where I always dropped a foot it is just to tight. I'll just have to practice.

TeamCheap 05-03-2009 09:10 PM

Well kato I am getting a bit excited about the ct90 and s90 now with a bunch of parts coming from you and other sources.

I plan to wire in the 50cc engine to the s90 first since it isnt even a runner right now and after that I'll wire the other 50cc engine into the ct90.

Both bikes will be about the same except the s90 has 18" rims but I may end up using ct90 rims (17") on it as well as a ct90 headlight and 12v hidden battery box since I will have to convert both to 12v.

I really need to paint both of them but My shed is in shambles right now.

katoranger 05-04-2009 06:10 AM

That Ct90 looks alot better than the two I parted out.

You first part should be a headlight and speedo as I sent it priority mail. Needed something to get free pickup.

The rest of them are on the slow boat from Atlanta. That spare frame will be put around back for you later.

Allen

TeamCheap 05-04-2009 06:36 AM

Thanks Kato.

That bike is rougher in person  but it does run and is rideable as it is.
I just have a bunch of little things to do to it.

I want to paint both of them and the s90 is really rough and it needs most of the parts.

winwun 05-04-2009 07:40 AM

I have an old (but slick) Honda 50 2 sp and I would like to put a larger engine in it -- does anyone know where I could get maybe a 70 or a 90 that would bolt in, preferably auto and 3 or 4 sp ?

TeamCheap 05-04-2009 09:35 AM

They are all over the place, well the slightly larger 125cc but even the 90cc engines are everywhere.

I had a difficult time getting the 50cc engines as there isnt much interest in them so not many people selling them I guess but I did find two that are 50cc, 4 speed auto for an unbelievable low price for the two.(under $150 shipped)

TeamCheap 05-14-2009 09:14 PM

OK some pics of the S90.
This is how it looked after a little while wrenching on it stripping it down.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0023-2.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0027-3.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0028-1.jpg

As you can see (or maybe cant) the new engine is NOT a direct bolt-in but then I didnt really expect it to be.(would have been nice though)

I dont want to cut/grind the S90 frame so I'll try to make an engine mounting adapter bracket.Once thats done and a few other mods I'll strip, sand and paint the frame.

AZ200cc 05-14-2009 09:41 PM

That will look nice when mounted, You picked a good one this project should keep ya busy :D

TeamCheap 05-15-2009 05:42 AM

I like the S90's style.

I just need to get the engine mounted into the frame and do a few other things and I'll paint the frame.
(It'll probably look worse after I paint it- )

I have so much to do to it:
rebuild the front forks
change the rims from 18" to 17" (I may use blue aluminum rims and lace them myself-oh boy  )
make the engine mounting adapter
wire it all up with electric stat and blinkers and everything else.

The front forks are about rusted out but thanks to KATO I do have something to work with.

I had to take some before pics so I can show the before/after look.

TeamCheap 05-16-2009 05:35 PM

So I decided to see what these parts were made out of that I bought from KATORANGER.

I took a nasty, crusty rear brake backing plate that had two colors of paint lightly sprayed on it and stripped all the parts off it and started to clean it up.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0029-1.jpg
This is how it looks now and I know the picture looks dark but it really does shine in the sun.

I learned to never NEVER EVER use a wire brush or wire wheel on these parts if you want to polish them to a mirror shine.

Even so after I polished it a bit and seen my wire wheel mistake I just used some 400grit sand paper and smoothed most of it out.

I will change my clean and prep procedure and keep going at all the parts I have to refurb.
That piece in my opinion is still far from finished as far as I'm concerned but it looks far better now than when I first started.
Probably less than an hours work on that part.

katoranger 05-16-2009 06:23 PM

I am glad to see that you can put those parts to use. I located a nice big bog for the frame and the parts that are still here. I will get them ready to go over the next few weeks.

FYI. I think that the brake on the xr80-100 are the same.

Allen

TeamCheap 05-16-2009 09:04 PM

OH man kato I am very happy with them, these parts are fine and for the most part it will just take a little bit of elbow grease to get them cleaned up.

It will be a little bit before I'm ready for the frame, a week or so but I will take it soon.

I plan to get these two bikes going, the CT90 and the S90 then I'll try my hand at slobber welding something from scratch with the left over parts.
(It cant be any more dangerous than that wood motorcycle  )

katoranger 05-16-2009 09:48 PM

No hurry. I am going to box it up and when you say go we can just slap a label on it.

Probably need to UooPS it.

Allen

AZ200cc 05-17-2009 01:29 AM

You need a polishing wheel for Your bench grinder :D
That part cleaned up pretty well. I anxious to see how it's going to look when completed.

TeamCheap 05-17-2009 05:41 AM

I used a 6" bench grinder converted to polisher and I have 1 polisher wheel that is sewed and another that is loose.
Its a new harbor freight bench grinder and is very very weak and easy to stall.

I messed up by using that tiny tiny fine wired wire wheel to clean it up initially, NEVER AGAIN :!:

My plan now is to get another blastbox and use fine walnut shell media to do the initial clean then a parts cleaner and then go to polisher I'll hand sand as needed.

The blastbox is on sale right now so I'll pick one up even though I dont really have the room for it.
It will also get into all those tight little spots very easily.

  The part is sitting right here on my desk still and it just amazes me how well it cleaned up in the few minutes I worked on it.

I have two bikes to do and I need to clean/polish both front and rear wheel hubs completely and then just a few other parts.

So it looks like I'll be lacing four rims in the future and still havnt ruled out colored aluminum rims for each bike.

I got some steel saturday so I hope to get some kind of engine adapter made for the S90 soon so I can get it painted then I'm on the down side of it.

My wife decided she wants her lower fork tube painted instead of polished but I may polish up a set and see how that looks.(thanks again KATO)

I plan to shoot the bikes paint with an air spray gun but I'm using oil based rustoleum and not sure how or even if that will work.(I foresee a lot of spraygun cleaning)

AZ200cc 05-17-2009 12:37 PM

Paint it John Deere green :D

TeamCheap 05-17-2009 12:48 PM

 Hers is now going to be a custom color aqua or teal, not straight forest green (john deere green) I have teased her to much :( and she wants it a bit different.

katoranger 05-17-2009 07:19 PM

Can't wait to see the finished product with all those junkyard parts.
I drove all the way to Nashville with those things. One big day of ebay/craigslist collecting.

Allen

TeamCheap 05-25-2009 08:33 AM

It will be a while KATO before these are done, like around next spring  hopefully sooner but I wouldnt hold my breath.

Anyway I have been cutting and grinding and am very close to welding up the engine mount for it.
Pretty much made the mount saturday.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0017-2.jpg

Its all just loose right now but once its all welded it should work just fine.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0016-1.jpg

A shot of the chain alignment (I hope its set right)
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0018-2.jpg

Here is a picture of the top section.
I used tubing and will weld it all together once I have it set and I may add a couple of cross braces as well so when I tighten the original engine bolts down they have something firm to compress against.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0003-7.jpg
This is the lower section and it will be welded to the upper section making an L-shaped piece.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0012-6.jpg

This is just a shot of how I was lining things up and drilling the holes the same but I messed up and needed to bend a piece and do some corrective filing.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0005-7.jpg

TeamCheap 05-25-2009 01:32 PM

More work done on it......hello......anyone out there .............anyone :(

So here is the bracket all finished and stuffed into the frame. (I think-hope)
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0007-4.jpg

Here it is on the engine and it has to be mounted on the engine first then it goes to the frame.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0009-3.jpg

Here it is supporting the engine and solid as a rock.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0012-7.jpg

Slobber welds for everyone.
I have enough slobber welds on that one piece for everyone.

I think I will put a dual exhaust on it, I seen one for sale that goes to the little atv's.
Set it up to be right under the bike crossing over in front of the center stand maybe.

AZ200cc 05-25-2009 08:49 PM

Your weldings getting better, Don't look like popcorn anymore
Srry JK
Heck the site was down I just noticed today it was working, Some catching up to do...Heck thats half the battle You can start powdercoatng the frame now :D

TeamCheap 05-25-2009 09:11 PM

I had to be careful when doing the welds on that engine mount as the tube can be burnt through very easily.

I wish I could powder coat it but I'll just shoot some paint on it and call it good.

But there is a small problem I found when taking it apart the rear upper shock mount threads are messed up so I'll have to fix that before I can paint it.

The shock mount is welded into the frame and looks to be a custom bolt/threaded rod that runs from one side to the other and not really replaceable.

I have a plan and hope to get it fixed this week.

AZ200cc 05-26-2009 10:28 PM

It will look good, The mount looks nice and nobody will be able to tell once it's all painted.....I can't remember if You decided on a color yet or not.

AZ200cc 06-07-2009 05:47 PM

I heard You got more parts, Updates man updates :D

TeamCheap 06-07-2009 07:40 PM

Not much to update right now, last weekend I repaired the left rear upper shock stud and started stripping the paint off.
Didnt do much to it this weekend except sand on it a bit more.

We are planning to move (I hope) and have been messing around more with that than anything even though we are just in a waiting mode right now until closing.

I doubt I'll get it rolling this summer with the new/old house because once we have that we will be very very busy making it a home.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0004-7.jpg
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0005-8.jpg

I JB welded that stud in there, I hope it will work.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...DSCF0007-5.jpg

The thing is pretty rusty but I think I can save it and If not I have the parts from kato as a backup (wildthing) project.

AZ200cc 06-07-2009 07:54 PM

Cool, Good luck with the house :D

katoranger 06-07-2009 08:02 PM

This could get interesting. I think I shipped you about a ct90 and half now.
