making tao 150 go a bit faster
so we went and brought the wifes tao tao 150 utility atv home to do some work on it .....need some thoughts on making this atv go a bit faster
|
intake, exhaust, rejet, performance cdi and a high performance coil
|
better explanation :
when using her atv's throttle once you reach 1/2 throttle that is as fast as it will go even though you can push the lever to full throttle it will not go any faster than 1/2 throttle.....we would like to have the other half please...lol |
hmm not sure what that would be, but the list i posted is the stuff you can do with out changing gears or tearing into the motor to try and find some internal parts that would work to sup it up with
|
already planning on getting a k&n air filter for it tomorrow and going to try adjusting the needle as well one notch
|
Mike's right on all counts.
There's horsepower hiding in that muffler, and the air filter is too restrictive. I'd recommend a Uni instead of a K&N for the dirt. After changing the muffler and air filter, you'll need to increase main and pilot jets to compensate. All of that and a better CDI will get you the full throttle you seek. |
Well if it won't go any faster from 1/2 to full throttle then i don't think lots of mods will help that, now you say it's a 150 eh?, is that a GY6 type setup with the CVT?, i wonder if the clutching (primary/secondary) is not working properly and therefore not allowing you to go any faster, i'm not sure, but do these have a speed limiting govener on them?

martian to me lol |
Does it have gears or do you press the throttle and it goes like a scooter?

if i drop the clip in the throttle needle one notch will this not allow more fuel into the carb thus increasing power?

I guess the question is, does the engine stay at a consistant rpm between 1/2 to full throttle or does the rpm increase but the atv will not gain speed?. |

No gears means you likely have a GY6 scooter style engine. I don't know what carb they use, but if it a CV style then the throttle cable does not directly control engine speed.
The slide is vacuum operated so the engine engine opens the slide for as much air is needed. The throttle control a butterfly. This is how my honda elite works. So the mods of larger jets/exhaust/air filter will help the engine use the rest of the throttle range. Overview of the gy6 carb. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuMH_ILOQmo Installing jets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baNDt...eature=related Hope this helps. |
Kat.....no that is not the same carb as the wifes....hers has the throttle cable going directly into the carb from the top and pulls up on the sleeve to increase speed.
|
Okay. It is the typical china bike PZ carb then. You probably just need to upjet the carb and open up the exhaust and air filter. I would get the performance CDI last.
The other option is a larger carb. |
sorry my bad it is the one that you posted the link for.
we found that with the throttle lever at full there was still more throttle at the carb so I tightened it up a bit to take up the slack in the cable....now the carb goes to max when the lever is at full throttle. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads015.jpg found this air box under the front of the atv but it goes no where not hooked to anything and nothing to hook a hose to? http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads017.jpg the filter that is in there was a bit dirty but nothing really and again it goes nowhere so i just put it all back in and carried on. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads018.jpg found the air filter box . http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads016.jpg ...hmmmm think a uni in place of this would be better??? http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads019.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads020.jpg |
went down to lordco and picked up a crankcase K&N air filter that fits perfectly in the air box...hopefully with this upgrade and the throttle workiing in sinc with the carb now we should see a bit more power....fingers x-ed
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...r/quads021.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...r/quads022.jpg and yes i oiled it lol |
Did you have to remove the body kit to access the air box? If so, it's much like the one we have. I used the boot that clamps onto the carb to secure a piece of ABS pipe, then I cut a hole in the plastic under the seat. The air filter is clamped onto the ABS under the seat, where it stays nice and dry, and it takes two seconds to access it.

You're going to get in trouble again for putting that junk on the end table.
|
very nice that you have a little air box to protect that nice little filter from water and mud.. id love to have a air box..
but fair warning, you might be able to squeeze by with that air filter and not doing a rejet.. but should you have a aftermarket exhaust installed DO A REJET BEFORE REALLY RIDING..a lot of times these quads come from the factory running extremely lean, if you add to that lean condition buy doing free flowing upgrades such as intake and exhaust.. its youre motor that pays and it could pay that bill a year from now or 3 days from now.. besides when you do upgrades you dont really take advantage of the extra power untill you do a rejet, and even doing the rejet adds a little power of its own.. keep checking youre spark plug to know what youre air/fuel ratio is right or lean |

yes I did have to but only had to undo the front pieces and prop them up as well as remove the rear bolt for the gas tank so it could be prop'd up out of the way as well with the body. I decided that this way was better for the filter due to all the mud that was plastered on the outside of the air box. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads023.jpg took it for a good run down the alley behind my house and it really seemed to have a bit more git-up-n-go so we will test it better tomorrow up at stave flats. went to work on the fire extinguisher and rear storage. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads024.jpg of course had to put the K&N decal on it .... http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads030.jpg got the rear storage bolted on. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads028.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads026.jpg strapped on a couple of things to see what it will look like and we like it. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads031.jpg |
Make sure you oil up that K&N before you finish the job.
|
Everybody knows that a well placed K&N decal adds 5hp.
I bolted a piece of UHMW plastic to the swingarm to prevent the chain from slapping on the steel. Much less rattly now. I highly recommend that you lube that reverse cable before it chooses to retire. Velcro shoes? Those are stylin'! |

did it before i installed |

observant aren't you??? surprised you did notice the extra holes in the bottom of the box.... |

An easy solution to the throttle issue. Just an adjustment. I will have to check the same on my scooter.
With just the filter you will probably be okay with the stock jetting. When you upgrade exhaust it will be time for a rejet. |
Agreed. The stock filter isn't terribly restrictive, but it's also not very effective.
|
Oh wow, I recognize that quad. Kickstart on the left, handle on the right with a cable going to the rear "diff" to put it in reverse. The motor was very reliable, always fired right up, but the frame started breaking in all the wrong places. Plus the rear axle was bent... finally sold it for next to nothing.

awesome someone that knows this atv.....only crack we have found was one of the engine mounts but we got it welded up. still havn't been able to use the retarded kick start due to the foot well being so small ....last time i tried to kick start it i broke a large portion of the plastic foot well out....seems kinda pointless to even have it. |
Ours doesn't have a plastic footwell. The plastic fender doesn't connect with the floorboard, and the floorboard is steel. Ours isn't easy to kickstart, but it works.
Maybe you could raise the kicker on the spline to make it more useful. |
ok that fix didn't work.....had full throttle but was lagging big time....I think that the new filter might be too dense for this to suck the air in properly.
we had a good day though.....tons of ppl out there with bikes and atv's got the g/f's atv up and going (needs a new battery) and all was great for a wile till she motions for me to come over to her.......chain is off hmmm ok....go to put the chain back on and oh my the master keeper and link piece are gone....lucky for her we brought the 110 with us and they have the same size chain.....steal master link and she is off again. we swap off here and there go all over the place then she tries to go up a hill way to steep for her atv.....backs down and turns too sharp at the bottom and flops it ...and busts off the brake lever....done for the day. Pics to come. |
Is she ok?

went to prospect equipment in mission today (they have a few atv's there that they sell) and we added a new brake lever to an order...$25
will be here before the end of the week and i don't have to drive :) |

well as you can see by the dates on the two posts it has been awhile.....finally gave up on these guys not letting me know what is going on. went to Sinclare's motor sports in newton and picked up a lever for $14.50 after taxes...go figure $10 cheaper. turns out the lever is not for the l/h side  my bad for not double checking. so on to other things....took front end off and started removing things that need to be replaced....engine start/stop/light cluster to be replaced due to no emergency stop button (someone removed it), r/h headlight harness and socket removed for replacement, batt removed for replacement and batt connections re-done. started revamping the foot wells as well. pics to come battery's dead can't find more. |
wait till she gets home and see's this lol
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads058.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads060.jpg new batt cable ends http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads062.jpg cut the foot wells back to the peg...can't trim the front part till the front plastic is back on and can measure plus will add a bit of mudflap off of the front part of the foot well. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads063.jpg would love to put checker plate on these http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads061.jpg W&G was this the space under the seat that you said to put the air filter?? batt goes in the back portion. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...n/quads064.jpg |
Yes, exactly the place. I used ABS pipe to connect the air filter to the carb, and I slipped the ABS inside the original carb intake boot. Probably not the most efficient way, but it's clean and it works.
