New Coolster 150-DX2.
5 Attachment(s)
So I posted my first time last night and was told to start a new thread....lol. I kinda hijacked someone's thread.
My name is Leon. I'm in Ashby Massachusetts in case anyone else is around. Kinda new to these "wheelers", I already have 2 110cc Coolster's, one bigger and one of the small ones. Today, my 150cc was delivered to my work. My boss was skeptical, but after seeing it, he wants one too...lol. Assembly went well by myself, from 3pm to 5:30. And that was uncrating to filling with gas and test ride. The frame of the crate had some damage and the bleeder screw for the rear brake was broken off and a couple scuffs here and there. Everything went together great. I do see some large rubber grommets that I couldn't figure out where they go. The smaller ones held the foot wells to the body. Next, I'm trying to figure out the hand guards. Couple other things, if I wanted to add a small lightbar up front, where would I wire it up to? Direct to the battery with a switch? Second, I think the carb needs adjustment already as it dosent start on first crank... fires and dies- unless given a bit o' throttle. If just coasting around light throttle, it seems it wants to bog and die, then clears up... right around 1/8" to 1/4" of thumb applied. Any pointers on adjusting that? Also, I have a ton of 5/30 Mobil 1 synthetic... can I run that? I think I saw 10w30 Thanks. |
Don't use mobil 1
Need to find oil that is jaso-ma certified which supports the cylinder and wet clutch application. Don't run the factory oil either....period If this is a friction belt drive , it doesn't require jaso oil |
What does that sticker say about engine oil?

Oil indication says 10w30. What's wrong with mobil 1?? I see people using amsoil in these...
Fits neatly next to my grass eater... |
So I'm done tinkering for the night, haven't really ridden it yet but did take a few laps around my property. I noticed a really loud vibration noise with low to mid rpm. Then when I got back to my garage, the brake light no longer worked. Tested the bulb and it was blown, running light still working though. Then I thought about it and revved it up in neutral a bit. What'd ya know, the vibration is the thin steel mount for the taillight shaking violently. That explains the blown bulb! And if I hold the mount in my hand and rev it up,... no vibration sound. Go figure. So that will be something I look into fixing now as well. Maybe they make an led replacement tail light for it too.
If any one has any suggestions for mods and upgrades, please let me know. Also there's a few questions I posted in my first post here if anyone can help. Thanks. |
You have a dry clutch system so you can run any 10w30 oil including Mobil 1. Don't run synthetic until you put some hours on the motor to let it break in and the rings set. You can also flip the rear wheel so the valve stem is on the inside to change the offset and have a wider wheel base at the rear. I see your tires are directional so you will have to swap them from one side to the other. this will make it more stable on turns. As far as the light bar I would run it to the battery with a fuse and switch. A lot of the vibration you are getting will go away after the engine breaks in. Try adjusting the idle screw on the carburetor. it's more than likely set to low. That should resolve the starting and idling issue.
|
You can also find "motorcycle" Mobil 1 made for wet clutches. I get mine at Auto Zone....but like JerryHawk says, you have a dry clutch anyway.
Not to start a "dreaded oil thread", but I'm a BIG proponent of synthetic....but it seems like every CB I have loves the 15W-40 diesel dino oil the best. Fine with me! Cheap! I've had some clutch chatter and squeal out of all the synth oils I've run in the CB's. |
Looking good and thanks for sharing the pictures. Here is my light upgrades thread:
http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=17571 I just spliced the new headlight it into the "high" beam wire because I didn't want to have more switches and the stock LED lights don't do much anyhow. Looks like someone needs a bigger garage...... |

Was curious Jerry, how bright are those old style lights? I could barely ride at night with the stock LEDs that came on mine. Are you running the stock plugs in yours?
Sorry about the slight “highjack”. |

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Gonna run it a few hours before changing and since I have a Powerstroke diesel, I have plenty of 15w40 around.
With that said, I got to spend about a half hour tearing through the snow on my 6 acre property. There's about a 4-6" frozen base with 2" of powder on top. This thing is pretty impressive I must say. It climbs right up steep hills with a lil extra throttle, and drives over piles of brush buried under snow no problem. I drove around with my 75 lb daughter as well as me at 255 and it didn't even struggle at all. One thing I think I want to upgrade asap is the shocks. They are poor at best. Wayyy too stiff, almost like they intended for a 600 lb rider. Swampy- My garage is 28x34 with two floors. Upstairs is a finished game room and big screen (SUPERBOWL! Go Pats!) Wouldn't mind an elevator to get stuff upstairs...lol. My mistake was forgetting to put my riding mower in the shed before the snow came... and the power washer... and the yard trailer/cart. |
Ohh, and speaking of yard trailer, has anyone found a way to tow a trailer with this atv??
|
Looks like you had some fun. :tup:Those shocks will loosen up after a while and not be so stiff.

Here's what I did. Worked out well, even though I made it for a pin hitch. I believe Dart Racer has a ball on his. He basically did the same thing. |
I want to get mine up in the snow and play around a bit, looks like a blast!
As mentioned the shocks may loosen up with time. I have two identical quads and one came out of the crate very stiff while the other was much more forgiving. After a few miles the stiff one became much “softer” and they both ride the same now. You have a nice size garage right there, 2LZ is going to be jealous! I have found the more room I have the more “stuff” I fill it with! I have an extra deep two car garage, 40X24 shed and a “Man Cave”. Still didn’t have enough room for the quads so I built a lean to off the man cave! |

Yeah my hitch is pretty much identical to 2LZ's. I just used his as the template and used what metal I had on hand. It's in the "Soon to be Rhino Owner" thread.
Gotta say it has held up really well.. no problems. It pulled 500 lbs through a rocky creek bed last trip. Easy and cheap to make in true China ATV fashion. A#1 top quality... LOL Get that power washer out of that freezing weather!!!!!.... the pump will crack if there is any water left in it. |

I did at least winterize the power washer with RV antifreeze...lol
Boy, that trailer hitch is quite awesome I must say....wish I had those metal working skills. Almost want to see if you can make me the parts and ship them...lol. Todays project was finding a light.... picked this little guy up at Advance auto parts for 34.99. Perfectly sized and pretty bright... dosent draw much either. Ps, sorry if the pix are huge, working on figuring out how to resize them. |
I like where you mounted it, no extra drilling required and its good and bright. Did you run new wires/switch or tap into the existing?
On resizing pics, - right click over the picture, open it with "paint", hit the resize button to shrink and save as. 2LZ being the techno guru he is taught me that. |

As far as the light, I had to elongate the holes in the bracket to line up with the existing bolt holes...easy enough. And for wiring, I ran three wires from the right side light to under the seat. One is power, one ground for bar, and one signal wire tapped into the blue wire at back of the headlight. I found with a test meter the blue is for high beam. I installed a relay under the seat at the battery and used the blue wire to trigger the relay to turn on the bar when I click the high beam lights on. |
The hitch is actually pretty easy to make. Not much different from what you did to mount the lights.
You just need some angle iron (not the stuff the shipping crate is made of) too thin and soft. A longer bolt that goes through the shock Some "U" bolts... drill... hack saw and a curved file(optional) It's kinda built like an Erector set. |

Can anyone tell me what this screw is? I drilled out the brass cap. I turn it one turn in or out and it dosent seem to affect idle or anything. I'm trying to correct a part throttle bog at slow speeds, like when taking off slow. I turned it a half tun in and it seems to have improved.
Thanks. |
Not sure but think that is your air/fuel mixture screw.
|
ive been looking for that damn air mixture screw, thanks!

Good news and not so good...
Let's start with the good.... I've come to find out that the bog I was getting must be due to the auto choke partially engaged. If I let it warm up till the Rpms drop, it runs excellent with no bog. But I find that if I try to ride before it's completely warmed up it bogs. Good to know. Bad.... I got bit by the vibrating screws bug. Went to put it in reverse and when I gave it throttle it slammed very hard and kinda felt like it popped out of reverse then didn't do anything. I played with the shifter and then it worked fine. Thought nothing of it really until it happened again. Sure enough, of the two 8mm screws that bolt the linkage arm to the trans, one was missing and the other pretty loose. I took the one I had to the hardware store and purchased a new one and applied red locktite to the screws. I did check over a LOT of bolts prior to riding but apparently missed those. What a dummy...lol |
Good to hear your bogging issues are only until it warms up. On my quads it’s called an “Enricher” but has the same effect as a choke. When mine are cold it will idle high for about a minute than spool down to around 700 RPM. Haven’t tried to ride them while it they are warming up but suspect they would act like yours.
Glad that was a minor fix on the reverse. A little Loctite is way better than a major gearing issue! Reminds me to give mine the once over before we take them on their next ride. |
The bog may also be caused by how lean these come from the factory to meet EPA standards. That lean condition has a tendency to clean up after a full warm up also.

So everyone says to flip the rear tires from one side to the other? I Meashured backspacing on my rims and apparently I got rims with 0 offset since they are equal inside and out, I.E.: no gain in swapping them.
Had a nice dumping of snow yesterday, tried to keep my trails open but failed since we got 16" of snow and already had a 6-8" frozen base. Now it's too deep to ride. |
axle spread
Hello....if you want a wider spread... you can buy adapterto give you more spread... 2 of them for about $40-$50.00 or longer axle bolts to act like spacers... see my post and cheack ebay... the adapters would work better and stronger for the larger quads... more stazible...

Hi, do you happen to have assembly instructions for the coolster 150? All I got from the dealer (powersportsmax) is a safety DVD and no instructions whatsoever but I have a bag with about 50 bolts/washers/nuts of various sizes and I'm not sure which goes where. The dealer is supposed to be emailing me instructions but they're taking their time. First they sent me a YouTube video of some guy starting his atv for the first time which obviously has nothing to do with assembly. Please let me know, I will try to go out there again and attempt putting things together. Thx.

Instructions………
I received none with my two quads either. Seemed a little intimidating till I laid all the parts/pieces/nut/bolts out and started on the front or the quad. Went together a lot easier than I thought it would and there really weren’t any issues. Give it a whirl and I bet you will surprise yourself. |

I'm sorry I didn't reply on the instructions. I don't get any notifications for this site. And yeah, I just guessed as to what goes where. There was some stuff left over as well.
Today I made my hitch for my coolster. The angle iron trick couldn't really work for mine as the swingarm has angle gussets in the way. I ended up using a 3"x10"X 1/4" flat plate and 5/16"x2.5"x4" stainless U-bolts. I bought the Coleman ATV hitch from Tractor supply. I tried it out today with good results. It has a little down slope to it but no big deal. |

A lot has happened lately! Got another new Coolster. We now have 4 of them. I Got wheel spacers for my rear wheels to widen the track a bit. Mine didn't come with offset wheels but the new one-my wife's- did. I can't stand the black rims. I've looked high and low on Amazon etc for new rims and then my youngest daughter suggested painting them. Hey- that works. Soon, hopefully the snow will go away as we just got dumped on over 15" .... I mean seriously it was all melted away and I was doing minor yard work already and then BAM! The pic with my wife was the weekend before, sunny and 65 and then 10-20 degrees and blizzard with 15+" the following weekend.
|
Family that rides together.......
Congrats on the stable. I bet the second one went together pretty quick. |
Where did you find the spacers ?
