Ssr xf250
~just picked up this SSR XF250, now the fun begins...
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlinkhttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-v...402_075139.jpg Step one, remove the stickers, lol... https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlinkhttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-i...402_080935.jpg this is better... |
Nice! What dealership did you buy her from? Or did you mail order? The stickers aren't horrible, but do make the bike look kind of toy-like. Removing them was definitely an improvement!!
|
Sweeeeeeet ride. I was at JP Motorsports and saw a SR250, those things are hefty bikes. Please let us know how it performs!
PS: How did you go about removing the stickers. |
Welcome; we are glad you joined us. :hi:
Thanks for posting the photos, and please keep us updated. :) |
I got the XF250 from my "local" dealer in Sacramento, about an hour drive from me.
http://www.atvwholesaleoutlet.com/html/enduro.html Taking the stickers off was easy, they hadn't been on the bike very long and I was able to just use my fingernails to get them started and pulled, I pulled them off and then put them on a large sheet of wax paper, not sure why I'm saving them, but I will let them gather dust for a few months... It is geared to go distance, 15T front / 43 rear, for the fire roads and trails I usually ride a 14 / 48 combo would work better. Pulled the seat and plastics off to see what I was working with... https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--...402_185357.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...402_185406.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-M...402_185420.jpg I also pulled off the kick-stand kill switch and the passenger pegs. The kill switch was two screws and a couple tie wraps, wrapped up the quick connect and ran the ends back under the seat. |
Welcome!
Sweet bike. Are those 17" rims? |

Do you plan to keep the DS tires, or go for the supermoto look?

I have always liked the TW200 because of the big fat tire. I would get one of these for that exact reason. I like the Qlink with the motard look, and never liked the dual sport Qlink look, but as close to the Qlink as these are, they look, to me, far nicer with these aggressive knobbies.
|
...oh, and I would get rid of the stickers, too! ;)
|
so a couple mods, I un-Californicated the XF by removing the EGR set up
and blocking off the exhaust as well as removing the evap canister. The box on top is the stock tool tube. Evap canister with EGR Valve and tubing https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-l...417_072637.jpg before https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-l...402_185431.jpg after https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P...417_072543.jpg So I used a piece of 1/4" stock metal and doubled up some gasket material. After some more test rides to make sure I have it all dialed in I will clean up the EGR Block and come up with some way to camouflage. I'm sure that if someone from the government takes a look I'll catch hell... Another upgrade, I removed the stock tool tube under the left rear and replaced it with a 14" welding rod tube from Fastenal (they have a local store in my town) the tubes run about $15 and is big enough to hold a tube of slime, tire irons, and other tools. It also matches the exhaust and give the look of dual pipes. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A...417_072649.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3...grodholder.jpg ~$kought |
A few more upgrades, added Rox 2" risers
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J...417_075953.jpg and Tusk D-Flex Handguards with Turn Signals, haven't wired in the turn signals yet, but should be an easy enough... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g...417_080006.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6...417_080047.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0...417_080100.jpg :hi: ~$kought |
I appreciated your terminology. :lmao:
Maybe you could just buy a non-Cali exhaust header, so it doesn't draw attention. Taobao is your friend. Another possibility is a stainless aftermarket header, but that might get looks from smog cops. I like the signals built into the hand guards. For a tool tube (and fuel storage), I use a manual canister: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OPERATOR-MAN...item3f444404d0 They happen to be perfect to fit an 887ml / 30 oz MSR bottle: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSR-Fuel-Bot...item1c4f64493c |

I've used the welding rod holder and turn signals on previous bikes and really like both, and it's always good to have some extra fuel. I have several of the MSR bottles |
Nice work; the bike looks great.
I bet you can tap the hole which fed the emissions equipment, and plug it with a bolt. If so, you can cut the square fitment from the exhaust header with an angle grinder. ;) |
To hide emissions mods there is that way to just leave all in place that are visible but plug them internally. A friend took polution stuff off a new pickup I bought and used a ball bearing inside one of the hoses, ( egr ) if I remember right.

I like the idea of tapping the exhaust and putting a bolt in, but at least my current work around is reversible should the need arise, I can always claim it was damaged and I am waiting for a replacement part from China...
|
The bike is looking good! I like the welding tube for the tools.
I experimented with blocking off the EGR and noticed smoother deceleration. Having the restrictive cat taken out of the stock muffler makes a big difference in this bike. That did require a jet change of 128 to 130 on my bike. |
With the jet change and mods to stock muffler and air box mine went from barely getting 60 mpg to now getting just over 80.

Ride Report
Finally got the XF250 off the pavement and into the "hills"
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...419_081431.jpg I am lucky enough to live near Carnegie SVRA http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1172 After airing down from the recommended 30psi to 15psi, the ride on the dirt smoothed out, but as I was to find out later in the day, I should have aired down even lower. Carnegie is hard dirt and loose rocks, 15psi was too high a pressure, especially for that wide front tire; I managed to get the front end to slip right out from under me in a fairly easy turn, bike went down and so did I, nothing broke on me or the bike, just some sore spots today (ATGATT)!!! So what did I discover about the SSR XF250GY, first for a 250cc bike geared for distance, it does a good job in 2nd gear getting my 210lb butt and gear up and down the hills. Suspension could use some upgrades front and rear, coming from a well set up Honda XR400 dirt bike to XF takes some adjustment, and I know I was spoiled on the XR. Design Flaw : https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I...419_112546.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...419_112559.jpg This Plastic Spur on the both sides of the bike, looks cool, give the bike a unique style, butt... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n.../s400/spur.jpg You may never notice this wearing regular shoes or boots, but if you wear actual riding boots and have your pants tucked in, this spur will catch the top of your boot. Several times I found myself caught up by these spurs, so I will either swap the plastic or try to make a clean cut and smooth it out. A view from the top... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-i...419_112642.jpg And for those who don't ride off road a lot, I spend most of my time up on the pegs, I have more control when I'm in the loose or more technical stuff. The wide part of the plastic is right in line with the pegs, pushing your legs out, so I think the easiest fix is some different pegs to get my foot position out a bit. Overall a fun ride, can't wait to get out again... |
Thanks for posting the update. :) I suggest you cut the offending spurs from the plastic with either an angle grinder, or a dremel tool. ;)
|
I agree with Spud. I bet you could cut and sand it so it looks factory.
Perhaps you would care to try some fatter pegs. |
Spur Removal
So i got the dremel tool out and clipped the boot grabbers,
and while I was at it, I put a few strips of attention getter... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k...421_144130.jpg spur removed, still needs a little work, maybe a few seconds of heat... And the glamor shot... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G...421_144115.jpg  |
Nice work. I bet your bike would light up at night.
|
Good work.
|
~so I was watching "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011) last night, and seeing
Steve Rogers in his SSR shirt had me wondering... someone in China a Marvel fan... http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1...nt-b-eagle.jpg |
That's funny. :D
You can see what he's thinking by the look on his face: "It seems to run on some form of electricity." |
Carb Questions, SSR XF250x
1 Attachment(s)
I am trying to get my bike to run right after re jetting with the Sigma 6 kit.
My SSR is a 2023 and was stock. I'm at sea level. These bikes are set very lean for EPA, and my bike was hard to start without choke. It would die at idle or starting off in 1st until good and warmed up. Drove nicely otherwise though. I put the new 40 pilot jet in Swapped the 128 stock main jet with 135 And added a shim/washer to the needle to raise it up a little. This improved starting and idle greatly. I started the bike first try with no choke, and it would not die at idle or when starting off in 1st. I assumed mostly because of the 40 pilot jet allowing more fuel at these low RPMs. Problem is, now the bike pops or sputters when letting off throttle in the 1/4 to 3/4 range. It also started hesitating, lurching at 3/4 to Full/WOT. I haven't done any of the airbox or muffler mods. |
Success! I took a crash course through YouTube to learn CV carb jetting & Air/Fuel mixture.
This video, if you're looking to learn, was very helpful... https://youtu.be/PfonTtJEDoE Here's what worked for me. (more details & explanation in the video) It was helpful to tune each throttle range (circuit) separately, and test drive after each. 1st. Pilot Jet: Effects 0 to 1/4 throttle. Leaving the new 40 pilot jet in, I set idle speed and fuel screw so bike is running well. It starts without choke now and does not die at idle or when starting off. 2nd. Main Jet: Effects 3/4 to full throttle. Lurching and hesitating at this throttle range (feels like bike suddenly slows then recovers, like you're hitting a wall of wind) is a sign of being too rich. Downsized the Main Jet from 135 to 130 but symptoms remained. Re-installed stock 128 and this circuit runs great! 3rd. Slide Needle: Mostly effects 1/4 to 3/4 throttle. I was hearing pops in this range after letting off throttle, so I was too lean. To richen up this circuit, I added a shim/washer to raise the needle, allowing more fuel in the mix. I am really enjoying how the bike runs now! Starts up easy, good power throughout, and no popping! |
CV carbs. I've only been able to achieve 90% success with those. I just rebuilt the one on Mrs. 2LZ Sporty and still get an occasional fart when I wick the throttle downshifting. The one on Q (much like your SSR) I've had the best luck with.
Good job on the fix! I'm glad to see SSR is still selling the XF250. GREAT bikes. Q (QLink XP200) has been flawless since 2009. |
Good job getting it running good. I also installed a sigma kit as well as exhaust and air filter mods. I think 132.5 main jet was as big as I was able to go on mine.
