I'm probably going to go across the back with a receiver style hitch, mostly because the likely candidate to be hauled anywhere is one of my British 3 speeds, which, with a generator hub, are a PITA to remove and install front wheels on.

You probably know this but I recommend going with a rack that has elongated 'loops' to hold the wheels and an inverted 'U' shaped padded bar to hold down the top tube. This will keep the bike from swinging on a 'hang and bang' type rack. Nashbar has a good one pretty inexpensive.

Nearly November and still riding weather in Cheeseland;-)

Maybe God extenting your season a bit to make up for lost time this summer.

Such a waste, because I'm not there as my employer is also making up for lost time.:hehe:

Eli and I went for a short ride last night and he was sporting his new lid with, wait for it, Iguana spines.

Three years old and wears an adult XS. A more than typical Friday night in town. November 4th, a Friday, almost 70F, people basking in a World Series win on the street and Eli waving to everybody.

where did you get those? I need to get those for my grandson!

Just rubber.

Wiped off a few more PO finger prints I didn't know about until just before we left for Puerto Rico. One thing done to improve performance is to remove the cats and mid pipes on late carbed models. That was done on mine and I didn't know it. A rejet is required, which wasn't done. I also had a slight leak on one float bowl. So new gaskets, too.

I only found out because I bought the 'Cylinder Head Temp' harness for the Trail Tech and pegged the head temp on a cold day. Pulled a plug and it was white. Checked the jets and they were stock, which, like the Chinese, the Russians set the bikes lean to get around US emission standards.

Which would explain the three washers on the needle. Two washers was too lean, after pulling the cats, so the PO added another washer instead of rejetting.

As I've learned with these beasts, baby steps when making changes. The stock set up is Keihen 130 main and 40 idle. The recommended set up is 132 main and 42 idle, with a caveat. The recommended set up is a base line and best to take it one change at a time. Some guys run 128 main and 45 stock. So I swapped out the idle jets to start. Backfiring through the carb when cold is gone and the low end feels better. So that's an improvement. Haven't gotten out on the highway to see if I need to up the main yet but that will happen sometime today.

Sport Rider 11-12-2016 11:02 AM

all this china bike maintenance is paying off with the ural!

BTW...I didn't have to do anything to my fuel injected Nomad/sidecar. :p

seriously though, glad you're getting it dialed in better.

cheesy 11-13-2016 07:34 PM

Back to work tomorrow. Have my priorities already loaded.

Did around a hundred miles today. Put the side car windshield back on yesterday. That costs about 3 mpg. Still nicer to gas up at 125 miles and take on less fuel than the first run at 80 miles. Mrs. C may be done riding for the season so I'll yank the windshield for the winter.

katoranger 11-14-2016 09:14 AM

When you engage two wheel drive does it lock the wheels together or does it still have a differential?

cheesy 11-14-2016 09:31 AM

They're locked together. Steering is wishful thinking.

I had my rig out Saturday. went about 100 miles too, to see my grandson's championship football game for the fall season. did some interstate at 70 and some back country roads through south carolina. I'm realizing how much impact the screen on the sidecar has when crusing on the highway.

That is what I thought. Like the tractor with the diff lock engaged.

Looking for some suggestions.

I rode the Ural to O'hare on Wednesday and ended up turning on the heated grips about halfway there. I only used the 'LOW' setting(35%). Kinda like that first experience with a heated seat, it was that nice.

Last night, riding back from O'hare, 35F, snow and 45mph headwinds. It was effing cold. Switched on the grips before I left the parking lot. Bumped them up to 'MED' setting (70%). Palms warm as toast, digits like ice. Wearing my Aussie winter gloves(a misnomer, I know) that I wear on the CX and my hands have never felt that cold.

Biggest difference between the two bikes is the windshields(You know what I mean;)). Large windshield on the CX that extends to the grips. Smaller windshield on the Ural does not extend to the grips. The obvious answer is I need to block the wind from my hands. So, brush guards, the same windshield as on the CX, or something else?

Sport Rider 11-19-2016 08:48 PM

brush guards would be cheaper, but I'd vote for the wider shield. it would be a better overall look. either way though, it'll sure help.

Barnone 11-20-2016 06:22 AM

My 2015 Ural cT on one of my last trips to Deal's Gap AKA the Dragon. Santa Claus was there so I figured it was about time to migrate to SW Florida for the winter.

Barnone 11-20-2016 06:26 AM

Now in FL for the winter. Got my double hook rig ready for the visiting grand children. LOL

Sport Rider 11-20-2016 02:21 PM

Barnone....had no idea you were on here. I'm also on soviet steeds and the usca forum too. small world. :hi:

Barnone-Great pics. Tell me about that bike rack set up. That's just what I am looking for. I just got back from working in Ft. Lauderdale on Friday and now looking out at Penobscot Bay in Maine. I'm cheeseheadmike at advrider and soviet steeds.

looks to be a standard bike carrier setup which inserts into the hitch receiver.

I had a couple of good laughs over that post. :D

I have a cheap set of "Acerbis" bark busters that I bought on Taobao, and I also bought the add-on spoilers. I haven't added the spoilers yet, but they'll certainly help keep the wind off in colder weather. The good news is that the bark busters are very well made and cheap.

If I was interested in riding in actual snow on a hack, I'd search for a set of Hippo Hands. Hippo Hands combined with grip heaters would be awesome.

Just a 4' piece of 1 1/2" square tubing U bolted to the sidecar frame. 1/8" wall thickness allows a 1 1/4" bicycle rack.

Barnone 11-23-2016 06:06 PM

SR, I'll get Jim Tom to hook you up with some shine in the sprang (spring).

Trying some photo posting with Flickr as Photobucket is still hit and miss after a full month.

Eli has been promoted to full Monkey today.

It was cold and overcast but we still had a good time riding around the Dundees.

He saw a playground and requested we stopped. He had a ball and I got cold.
