BTW the TBR is 9 pounds lighter than stock with no catalyst. :D

Holy cow; 9 pounds! That is a terrific weight loss! :D

Spud :)

It's a heavy stock muffler to be sure. I added a few pounds with the rack and skidplate but I bet I still have a decent net weight loss.

I wonder how much I'd lose trading the stock rear fender and light for an Edge II...

I was very pleased to lose 9 pounds from my XR650L by relocating the battery, and eliminating the battery box. :) XR650L owners who replace the entire exhaust system only drop 3-4 pounds from the bike. ;)

Does the BRP have a cat in the exhaust? The TBR is aluminum and magnesium. It is pretty light. Andy bought the carbon fiber one which is very cool looking, and I'm sure a little lighter still.

I don't think the BRP has a catalytic converter in the exhaust, but I don't know for sure, Doc. I must admit, I don't know much about catalytic converters. ;) The stock, XR650L muffler is supposed to weigh 7 pounds. The FMF, Powercore 4 weighs 5 pounds, and the FMF, Q4 weighs about 5.5 pounds. I think the difference between the FMF, Hi-Flo header, and the stock header is about 1-1.5 pounds. If you can drop 9 pounds off the KLX with an aftermarket exhaust system, I say go for it! I wouldn't care how loud it sounded! :D

I am probably getting old, but I would rather it just came with quiet insert if no power loss.

FastDoc 03-17-2011 11:19 AM

Andy weighed the stock exhaust and he said it was almost 15 pounds!

Now that I think about it my weight savings may be less. I ordered the aluminum can and Andy paid the extra cash for carbon fiber which is likely a little lighter. Either way I'm ahead in terms of weight. :D

I may add the quieting piece...

I do quite a bit of 'mild' trespassing (railroad property, Irrigation District property) where I ride and I don't need the attention...

With that said, people have been hunting, riding bikes horses and 4 wheelers on these trails for decades and I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble...

I just got a new muffler on the ranger. Sure nice not having the drone and the leaking exhaust under the cab.

I had a crf150r exhaust on my lifan. It was loud. Great for performance, but commuting got old.

The elite is nice and quiet.

FastDoc 03-17-2011 01:35 PM

I like nice and quiet also. Maybe the tip will be a perfect comprimise.

Glad the Ranger is fixed too. :D

I agree with both you gentlemen; I prefer quiet exhaust systems. :) However, I think losing 9 pounds off the KLX250S will make a big difference in handling. I think adding a quiet insert is an excellent compromise. ;) I am still amazed that the KLX exhaust system weighs 15 pounds! 8O The entire Honda, XR650L exhaust system weighs about 9 pounds. My Zongshen exhaust system weighed 12.5 pounds. 8O Do catalytic converters really weigh that much! :?:

I think the weight is from the double walled steel exhaust needed to retain some of the immense heat generated by the converter. The cat itself is very very light.

That makes sense, Brother Bill! I didn't know the catalytic converters required a double-walled exhaust! 8O It's no wonder they are so heavy. ;) I strongly encourage you to lose all that highly-placed weight, and install the aftermarket exhaust. I'm sure you can find a suitable quiet insert to reduce the sound levels. ;)

I got a call from Andy a while ago. He has my exhaust on. After work I'll go to his shop and we will do both our jet kits. I'll be bring pizza, beer, and 6 M4 0.7X14 Allen head screws. :D

Please don't forget the camera, Doc! :D

His bike does rock now though. The power difference is very obvious.

Lacking a dyno I will compare top speeds and 40-60 top gear full throttle pulls on the same section of road on windless days.

Top-gear roll-on 40-60 mph before mods: 7.4 sec
GPS top speed in a tuck before mods: 87 MPH

Not bad for a little 250! :P

We'll see what she does after the mods.

BTW the TBR is 9 pounds lighter than stock with no catalyst. :D

After mods performance:

Top speed: 99 (indicated, likely 91 GPS)

Top gear roll-on 40-60 :D: 7.0 seconds

Nothing to sneeze at.
