Sport Rider 10-11-2016 10:21 AM

my nomad/sidecar gets about 30 mpg. between weight and wind resistance, MPGs get killed. prior to sidecar I was at about 30-40.

Mileage has gotten a bit better, up to about 25 now.

Almost eerie how much you and i think alike on this one Weld....far better puncture resistance on a lighter machine like a DT or XL. Hmmm now i will def need to give this idea some more thought :thanks:

On the plus side, the Duros are not super spendy but you'll need to shop around. In the 4.00 x 19 I need, I found them for under $60usd each, but I've seen them as high as $134usd at Ural dealerships.

BlackBike 10-13-2016 12:24 AM

Wow, 6 ply ! Now were talking

cheesy 10-13-2016 08:31 PM

Where I got mine.

Almost done with wiping off the PO finger prints. Retorqued the cylinder heads and adjusted the valves, which were a bit tight. Lash should be .003-.005, I couldn't get an .003 in there. Set them at .004.

Checked the plugs and things seem a bit rich. That could be anything from excess idling, a dirty air filter, restrictive exhaust or the wrong plugs. I'm leaning towards plugs. Specs call for an NGK BP7HS and the plugs I pulled are Autolites that may be too cold. Gap was off by almost .010. Regapped and put back in. New NGK plugs will be here on Sunday.

For grins, I decided to check the pilot screw settings. Good thing. Factory is 1.5 turns out. Left carb was .5 and the right was almost 3. I'm surprised it idled at all. Much better now.

Only things left for me to do is pull the air filter to clean it and sync the carbs. The air cleaner looks to be a two cuppa job to get out. It's supposed to be a K & N filter from the factory and my Service Kit went with the old F150 when I sold it. Syncing will be easier than the CX. I don't need to remove anything.

Almost there. This thing is so much easier to work on than the CX.

FastDoc 10-14-2016 12:09 PM

It sounds much more pleasant and satisfying to work on than a crane.

These bikes strike me as having tractor-like reliability. Much like when you pull a SBC apart, and you can't figure out how it ever started, much less ran.

FastDoc 10-14-2016 02:37 PM

What's an SBC Weld?

Bruce's 10-14-2016 02:48 PM

Small block Chevy

I think I heard that GM engines manage to continue to run badly long after other engines have quit.

Thanks.

Got one of those in the car in my avatar. Good motor. Fast enough to get out of it's own way ;-)

cheesy 10-14-2016 09:25 PM

Got the seat belt in the sidecar today. Once I got that finished, I decided it was time to take Eli to Cycle Gear and get him his helmet. Got him a Bilt Roadster Helmet in gloss black.

The kid is such a flirt and had the girl who was helping us eating out of his hand. Then he said "Please and Thank You" to her when we checked out and she asked if he wanted to carry the bag. The guy scored points.

We had lunch together, then Grandpa had to go back to Cycle Gear because he saw something he wanted and lost the rationalization argument with himself.

I got a vintage looking helmet to go with the vintage looking bike.:D

I'd say you won the rationalization argument.

Oh man, I pulled one apart one time that was so worn out, I removed the timing chain by hand! On that same car, the battery cable to the starter was down to a couple of strands inside of the tube, and it still started without catching on fire. I've also seen distributor counter-weight studs completely pulled out of the plate, so the mechanical advance doesn't even function. I've seen plug electrodes that are non-existant. Despite all of that, they still run. I suspect you're RPOC will be similarly hearty.

katoranger 10-15-2016 04:30 PM

The will run bad longer some cars will run. The newer LS engines are taking on the same reputation.

I made a new friend today. Not much of a talker, though.

Weld-I know he doesn't get it from me but it's amusing to watch him work.

Weldangrind 10-16-2016 11:42 AM

That guy would rather be dead than red.

cheesy 10-17-2016 11:05 PM

Had the first real Ural hiccup Saturday afternoon. Had me thinking it might cost many rubles but it was a cheap fix, just lots of time to diagnose.

Anyway, after the pic with my new friend was taken, the two of us were in a parade for Bike Bald, a children's cancer organization. Two miles in first gear with a lot of stops. I killed the engine if the stops were more than a couple minutes. The bike was parked for a couple of hours during the rest of the festivities, where I kept saying "No, it's not a BMW.", "Yes, it really is a 2007"., and "Yes, it really is a godless commie Russian motorcycle."

I'm almost home when I had to do a bit of WOT maneuvering to keep from getting smooshed. About a hundred yards further down the road at a normal speed, the right cylinder backfired through the carb and shut down. I got the bike running again and got home with the cylinder cutting in and out and farting through the carb.

Long story short, I got it squared away. A lot of carbon deposits in the right cylinder and I'm guessing something broke loose and ended up on the valve seats. So, carbs were gone through, correct plugs, new K & N air filter, and balanced carbs. I only got a short ride in this evening, so I didn't get a chance to yank a plug to check the color but all is good now.

A few pics of Saturdays' event.

Even though he has Lt. bars.

One of the corrections on the Ural. The right, sooty Autolite plug is supposed to be a direct replacement for the NGK on the right. I don't think so.

cheesy, good read and pics, thanks.

Weldangrind 10-18-2016 12:54 PM

Do you have a compression tester? It would be interesting to know if the cylinders are within 10% of each other. Love that Lincoln!

Yes I do, Weld. Two, to be exact, because I couldn't find my good seventy year old one. So, I bought one from HF. Got home and set it down right next to the one I couldn't find.:ohno:

Anywho, on a warm engine that just had 5 ounces of Seafoam shot into each carb and smoked the neighborhood. 124 psi on the cylinder giving me problems and 118 on the other.

One last carb issue to suss and that is new fuel filters and rerouting fuel lines.

cheesy 10-22-2016 08:13 PM

Running really nice now.
I had some free time this morning and rode down to the local Ural dealer. One, to get some seat time. Two, to see if I could get some small parts thus supporting a local business. And Three, to see if I could meet Jeremy, the local Ural Wizard. Got two out of three. Jeremy doesn't work weekends.

I did have a nice chat with one of the business owners, though. She asked if I got my Ural from them and I had to tell her no. Then I mentioned that I had sent two emails requesting a test ride and received nary a reply. I saw the 'deer in the headlight stare', followed by a reddening face, followed by a sigh, and then an apology. Methinks someone may be in for a butt chewing.

I was able to get the parts I came in for, a pair of oil filter seals(mine was missing, got an o-ring in its place). I was offered a pair of Russian oil filters cheap, so I got those, too.

Here's out front. The one I'd wanted to see is the Patrol on the left.

The Gray one is a Gear Up like mine. The orange one is the CT. The CT is the sports car, the others are Jeeps.

The carb work and tuneup paid off. Up to almost 29 mpg.

FastDoc 10-24-2016 12:44 PM

Glad she is running good!

Good on you for supporting the little guy when you can. I do the same with some bicycle stuff from the LBS's.

Neat pic to see so many Urals. Happy to see you are still having good riding weather.

Hah. Point conceded.

FastDoc 10-25-2016 12:48 PM

Speaking of 'modern antiques' my Enfield will get 70 MPG but it takes a loooong time to go that far ;-)

As far as range goes you can store jerry cans in the sidecar and have enough range to cross Siberia, which I'm sure was part of the Ural's original design parameter.

cheesy 10-28-2016 11:06 AM

I'm killing time at MIA this morning and had a think. I need a bicycle rack on the Ural.

FastDoc 10-28-2016 12:13 PM

That's the spirit!!!

I'd love to see that.

On the Gold Wing forum I've seen some well engineered bicycle racks. With the sidecar I bet there are plenty of ways to do a good job. I'd be EXTRA jealous for that.

cheesy 10-28-2016 08:56 PM

One of my fixed gear buddies has a similar setup on his V-Strom.

I'm probably going to go across the back with a receiver style hitch, mostly because the likely candidate to be hauled anywhere is one of my British 3 speeds, which, with a generator hub, are a PITA to remove and install front wheels on.

Took the side car windshield off before running back and forth to O'hare. Brought it up to 31.5.

So:p. :D

Joking aside, it's all dialed in. Plugs are a light tan now, not the powdered soot I had before. Neutral switch is adjusted enough that the light only comes on in neutral. Well, most of the time, anyway. I also added a pad to the brake pedal from Ural of New England. Raises the contact point on the pedal about 3/4 " and basically adds that 3/4" to the pedal travel. Which means I now have real rear brakes instead of 'retarders'.

Time to clean up and go to out to dinner with Mrs. C. If it wasn't going to rain, we'd take the Ural.

Fascinating.

I don't like the nylon strap around the bike's headset, looks like it would wear the paint but other than that some fine engineering there.

Nice Connie too. Great bikes.
