Great work Spud!!!

Mud puddles suck. Glad for the ATV rescue.

The YZP will now make it over 100,000 miles, provided the Japanese knock off Zong engine (tongue in cheeck) is as good as the Chinese original.

Sounds like a great perfomance upgrade too, the six speed in particular.

Thank God for an early spring, looks like good riding out there in Spudland!

Weldangrind 03-08-2016 01:15 AM

Just catching up. Thanks for the confirmation that the XT has a higher sixth gear than the Zong's fifth. I also procured an XT225, and I plan to use the innards on my TW.

Thanks for the kind words, Doc. :) Indeed, spring is arriving early in Spudland.

You're welcome, Weld. :)

Sweet exchange Spud. Yamazong will be a real pleasure to ride now after you resurrected it. You can be proud of saving another scoot from the landfill. Hate to ask but gotta ask whats the story with the mud puddle eating your bike? Did you get your undies wet? :) rj

ps , paint it red and really confuse people, just saying

SpudRider 03-09-2016 04:12 PM

Thank you, Rob. :)

Yes, I was wet above my waist. I ruined a digital camera I had hanging on my belt, and I lost my cell phone in the mud pond as well. Fortunately, the camera was a few years old, and the phone was a 'dumb phone.' ;) I was happy to get a ride out; I was about 8 miles from the nearest town. :wtf:

The next day I came back with my trailer, and parked at the trailhead. I quickly got a ride on an ATV back to the abandoned Zong. After changing both the spark plug and CDI unit, I got the bike to run. I rode back the the car, and trailered the bike home.

[QUOTE=SpudRider;206339]Krylon Fusion spray paint, in Gloss Patriotic Blue, would do a nice job. :)

Btw, used gloss fusion black on mine and it didn't leave it that glossy. I am going to apply fusion gloss clear as overcoat (warning, urathane based spray clear mares the finish, don't use it. Use that polycrillic spray or fusion glOSS clear only for clearcoat). Will let ya know how it turns out.

SpudRider 03-13-2016 01:31 AM

I finished painting the YamaZong with Patriotic Blue, Krylon Fusion spray paint. I also sprayed Krylon Fusion Clear Coat, with UV protection, over the painted plastic. Here are some photos of the finished paint job. :)

Here is a photo of the new metric speedometer, which is mounted behind the blue headlight shroud. :)

BlackBike 03-13-2016 01:45 AM

Good grief, except for the tarnished undercarriage it looks like a new bike. I looked but couldn't find fusion clear, I bought that polycrillic spray and did a test patch which will work, just need some sun and warm.

Do you have to wait for breaker in period or can you hammer it now. Curious to know top gps speed with that new yam engine. Is it true 250cc

I wonder what people think of us taking pics of our bikes .

SpudRider 03-13-2016 04:02 AM

Thank you. :) After 70,000 miles, the bike is a little dirty, but the paint job turned out nice. ;)

The engine is still a little tight, and I might need to tweak the carburetor jets, change sprockets, et cetera. I also need to check the speedometer versus a GPS receiver. ;) The engine has a displacement of 223 cubic centimeters.

Ron B 03-13-2016 07:51 AM

wow, looks like a whole new bike. turned out great !

X2! Beautiful! Truly out of the ashes!

SpudRider 03-13-2016 01:15 PM

Thank you, gentlemen. I really like the Patriot Blue color. :) I am thinking of painting my Zongshen RX3 in the following color scheme, in Patriotic Blue. ;)

BlackBike 03-13-2016 01:25 PM

Rx3 ...Uh oh here we go.

A good steel wool rub down on that undercarriage side, prep with alcohol or other similar product and some Platinum gloss regular rattle can paint would finish the resto. 140,000mi just around the corner

Louis Angel 03-13-2016 03:16 PM

Looks great dude!!!!! I love blue.

SpudRider 03-14-2016 12:08 AM

I've decided on a slightly different color scheme for my Zongshen RX3. :)

Do me a favor just for s**** and giggles, paint the front bar blue and post it. That round guard bar like they do on some of the factory models.

I thought Texas was big, man... that's Wide Open Country

SpudRider 03-14-2016 06:42 AM

Indeed, it is. It is very fun to ride here. :)

I think after all the years, I may have seen only one single car in the background of any of Spuds pics. First I thought he was riding on Mars. ;-) The man loves his solitude!

Other than a long push or pull sounds like you may have not had a choice, but do you think running the engine with the water in it contributed to it's demise?

I like how you call it a 'mud pond', rather than a puddle. Maybe you can go back in the summer and catch a catfish ;-)

FastDoc 03-14-2016 12:35 PM

Bike looks new again, Spud. Love the blue!

Yes, the silt in the water caused the premature demise of the engine. ;) However, there was so much mud in the water, a mere oil change would never have removed it. :ohno: Also, I didn't have a choice to push or pull the bike out of there. You have ridden this fire road many times in your several visits to Idaho; I was miles from the nearest gate, let alone the nearest town. ;)

The mud pond was about 15 feet in diameter; it traversed the entire fire road, with a steep hill on one side, and a steep decline on the other side; I could not avoid it. :ohno: The water was about 18 inches deep, and the bottom of the pond was covered in greasy mud. When the front wheel exited the other side of the pond, the rear wheel slipped in the goop. I attempted to put down a foot, but there was only water beneath my foot.

I could hardly stand up in the goop, let alone push the bike out of it. It probably took me about 30 minutes to shuffle my way out of the mud pond. :ohno:

Weldangrind 03-15-2016 05:51 PM

Spud, I'm so grateful that you are ok.

SpudRider 03-15-2016 07:00 PM

Thank you, Weld. :)

BlackBike 03-15-2016 07:28 PM

And the mountain water was warm as the Gulf of Mexico I'm sure.:lmao:

Pliskin 03-21-2016 11:45 PM

Spud you made the Zong now Yamazong even better. Yamazong will be indestructible. Great idea with changing the colour too. Cool you upgraded with metric speedo, won't have to do conversions anymore. :) You'll probably do oil changes every 2,000km.

SpudRider 03-22-2016 12:36 AM

Thank you, Pliskin. :) Indeed, I plan to change the engine oil every 2,000 kilometers. ;)

zingshoen 03-29-2016 01:10 AM

spud, that s a great modification! i wouldn t mind a TT-2xx coming my way!

what s your current sprocket ratio with the new motor and are you satisfied with it? lowering the ratio on the zong brought the motor to life, of course, but do the additional 27 cc give you noticeable more low end?

SpudRider 03-29-2016 01:18 AM

Thank you, Zingshoen. :)

I am currently using the stock sprocket ratio for the XT225, which is 15T/45T. I definitely notice more power from the extra 27 cc of engine displacement. :) Based upon the comments of other XT225 riders, I did purchase a 16T CS sprocket, but I have yet to install it. ;)

SpudRider 04-10-2016 07:30 AM

I just finished the custom paint job for my Zongshen RX3. I painted the RX3 Patriotic Blue, the same color as my Zongshen Sierra 200 (ZS200GY-2). :)

great job spud! how many miles do you have on it now?

2LZ 04-10-2016 11:11 AM

Excellent! Do you find the blue to be faster?

BlackBike 04-10-2016 11:27 AM

2lz... Fast, probably not . Will naturally attract more lookiyloos (traffic, congestion ), thus decreasing velocity. :p

I have discovered blue is just as fast as orange. ;) Therefore, I plan to keep both my Zongshen bikes painted blue.

It is going to rain here for the next few days. However, I will watch for this phenomenon to appear in the future. ;)
