my C10 has a filter cartridge as well. I can get decent ones locally, but still have the oil all over my hands when it's removed. someone makes an aftermarket SPOF mount, but it's pricy at about $140. I'll live with oil on my hands. :)

cheesy 12-31-2018 02:00 PM

At that price, yes. You can get a lot of rags for $140.

I got my adapter from Vostok Motorcycles based in the UK for about $50 shipped.

cheesy 01-27-2019 04:40 PM

Lookee, a box from Belarus. What's in it?

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4804/...310353ba_z.jpg

It's an oil pan and a couple of gaskets.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7835/...69d12e27_z.jpg

And not just any oil pan, but the IMZ Deep Pan for Arpok.

The oil filter adapter and pump extension are already here and in the garage. It's in the single digits outside, so they are staying there for now.

And now for something completely different, some of Mrs. C's trippin' artwork.

Rode the Ural to the foot doc this afternoon. It's really nice out so I told Mrs. C I'd take the long way home. Long way home would be US20 through Elgin, where the 55 speed limit is more like a guideline. Ural hit 72 while keeping up with traffic.:) Redline is 5800 and I was at 5100, so I got off at the next exit and a more sane 60.

We've also had dog sitting duty this week, but try as I might, the grand puppy wants nothing to do with the sidecar.

Sport Rider 03-29-2019 10:51 PM

I haven't tried either of my dogs in the sidecar yet. I don't think my granddaughter would move over anyway. :-D

The Bambino had his first ride in the Ural yesterday. We went around the block while the Missus held him in the sidecar. He was much more interested in flipping the switches in the sidecar than actually realizing what was going on. Oh well, he's young, there's still plenty of time to get him infected with the motorcycle bug.

Cool beans. Start them young.
My youngest grandson will get his first solo ride later next month.

Almost true. Ginny is getting up in years. I’ve watched her reasoning whether or not it’s worth the effort to get off her comfy chair for food.

Unless it’s pizza. Pizza is definitely worth it.

One of our dogs turned twenty around Valentine’s Day ,he is blind and deaf ,he will still do anything for food and he is very old for a dog ,although he is only upright about 15 minutes a day .
Throw a slice a pizza in the sidecar ,then get behind her with a scary vacuum cleaner .Instant sidecar friend ! .

Our late, short for his weight beagle would have been in the tub without any coaxing. The Iggy probably would have, too. They were pretty calm in a canoe.

Out on the pickemup truck yesterday. Two cans of gas for the mower and chipper, plus four 8’ pieces of trim for continuing honey do projects.

Mod Day today. New deeper oil pan.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a70b7c3c_z.jpg
Kind of a slight pain in the butt to change out. One frozen bolt that released with a bit of heat. A lot of casting flash needed to be removed from the new pan, along with chasing the drain plug threads, and finishing the bolt holes. Now I know why I only paid thirty bucks for the pan.

The spin on oil filter is not to be just yet. My rig has a crossover exhaust pipe that interferes with getting the filter on. Solutions are, 1) Keep using the cartridges. 2) Remove crossover pipe. 3) Dent the crossover pipe. 4) Bring a case of beer to my friends machine shop and have him face off about 1/4-3/8" thread from the adapter. Doing number 1 now and eventually number 4.

cheesy 04-28-2019 10:48 AM

In prep for an upcoming trip next month, been doing the mods, a tune up, and various checks.
Tune up consists of new plugs, valve clearances, carb balance, and idle adjustment. Plugs, two years old, looked fine but new are cheap insurance. Valve clearances are .004” for both. Left jug was perfect, right was .005 and a tight .004. Both are the same now. Carbs were good, just needed an idle adjustment.
For the first time since I bought the rig, I pulled the petcock the check the in tank filters. I hear horror stories about them getting crudded up and causing fuel issues. Not a bit of crud on mine.

Decided to do a side by side comparison between the RPOC and the Maggot regarding problems.
Bought the Maggot in 2010 with 20K on the clock. Up to 27K now. In that time, the engine has been out twice. Once for broken timing chain guides and once for stator replacement, (which probably wasn’t needed). Spent months chasing a mid range rpm miss which turned out to be the ‘new’ coils. Put the original coils back in, no more missing. Replaced the tired stock CDI box with a FinnBoxG47, and then with an updated FinnBox. Ran great...until the low speed coil on the replacement stator failed. Choice was either pulling the engine a third time and replacing the stator with another crap shoot rebuilt, which, by the way, would require replacing the water pump seals. Again. Or, look into an Aussie developed and built Hall Effect ignition system with a microprocessor. Australia won, and it looks like it was a good choice. First set of replacement tires are going on soon. Largest outlays of cash were for ignition systems. Purchase price of the bike was $600.

RPOC is a heck of a lot newer, 2007 vs 1979, though much of the technology is 1950s. Had 15K miles on the clock when purchased in late 2016 for $6200. At 25K now. Other than the FD fiasco last year, removing the PO finger prints, and speedometers, have had very few problems. Largest outlays of cash have been for tires and fuel. The rig gets about half the mpg of the Honda and requires premium fuel. Sidecar tires wear funny and quickly. I’ve learned if you rotate between the hack and pusher tire, you can get a pretty good increase in tire life. Even better if throw the spare into the mix.

Both have their high points and low points but I think the RPOC grin factors are greater.

The Ural requires premium? Is that due to high compression or just an antiquated head design?

Go with the second one. CR is only 8.5:1 but the 93 octane helps in keeping the air cooled head temps down. The deep sump has helped a lot, too.

The Maggot has a CR of 10.0:1 and requires 89. Go figure.

Emerikol 05-09-2019 11:09 PM

I run premium in all my motorcycles, and usually the first tank of a long road trip in the Suburban. I think it's cheap insurance on the motorcycles, and I like to think that for a long road trip in the Suburban, a tankful of premium helps to clean everything out since the engine will be whizzing around at full operating temperature for an extended period of time. just my two cents worth, but for the cost of premium in the bikes, and the occasional 40 gallon fill up in the Suburban, it's not going to break the bank.

I hadn't considered the cooler intake charge. Makes sense. As long as it will light premium at that compression ratio, I'd do it.

Rust Repair

Doing some rust repair on the Ural this weekend. Also gives me an excuse to try out the new airbrushes and have a cold one or two in the process.

What I want to fix.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d034e4244f.jpg

So, I have this nifty little spot blaster that you attach to an air compressor that’s the catsass for rust spots. It does this with a quick pull of the trigger.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b7f83fbcde.jpg
The rust was worse than it looked.

A little more prep with the Dremel version of a Roc-Loc.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d53866ec51.jpg

Filler and a libation. It’s been a few years so this actually took a couple of attempts. The filler, not the libation.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8dc8a91b2e.jpg

In primer. This is where I stopped for the night. There were a couple of try’s here, too. I plan to finish after breakfast.

It was 90F+ in the garage and I was wearing shorts. Also, I did notice my wire welder at the primer stage.

First try with 1 Shot Medium Green. Even thinned 50%, this stuff is dense.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0d5d30d6_z.jpg
Lays really nice.

Createx Burnt Umber thinned 10%. Great stuff to work with, too.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2a61b6df_z.jpg
I faded the brown over the green in the center of the fender to cut the brightness. The brown is a water based acrylic that I expect to fade.

I'm giving it a few days to cure then will hit it with some very fine polishing compound to soften the edges.

I think it was time to change the front brake pads.:hmm::D
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bec1386864.jpg

Readjusted the rears while I was at it. Up to almost 45,000km/28,000mi on the beast and still running strong.

New Battery Day.
The battery on a Ural is an absolute pain in the butt to change. Besides removing the seat, the starter needs to have the upper bolt removed and the lower bolt loosened enough to let the starter drop a bit. Once you manage to remove the battery retainer straps and the cables, the battery needs to be raised, lowered, tilted, turned, raised again until it slips out. You’ll wonder how it happened.
Reassembly is not the reverse. First, remove the insulator pad the battery sits on, then slip the battery in by raising, lowering, tilting, turning, and raising again. It will suddenly slip into place. Again, you’ll wonder how it happened. Raise battery and slide insulator under the battery. Slide the battery toward the front and attach the rear half of the retainer strap you should have installed before putting in the battery. The insulator will have almost slipped out, slide it back under the battery. Attach the front half of the retainer and bolt the two halves together using the Ural M5 bolt, an 8mm open end and a pliers because the bolt is a Phillips head and there is no way in hell a Phillips screwdriver will fit in there. Bolt the starter back in place using an 8mm Allen key. The key will either be too long or too short and the ball ends are at the other house. Attach the battery cables while muttering “hoo dafuq designed this?” Also, “Do Russians have tiny little hands or do they force children to do this?”
“Hey, knucklehead, think those battery cables suck? Wait till you try to put that seat back on. How many times can you drop a bolt? More than you thought possible, that’s how many. Hahahaha! Ya sap.”

At least it cranks now and I’m back to a one kick start. And it was warm in the garage.

You just described the removal of the valve cover on my CG-powered quad. You could bash it with a hammer and not get it to move, then it will literally fall out. Reassembly is an equal mystery. :hmm:

I finally saw that commercial yesterday. On top of that, we also watched the crappy movie Mortdecai and there was a chase scene with a Ural in it. As I know how fast a Ural is, I laughed and thought of O J Simpsons’ chase.

cheesy 05-24-2020 09:25 PM

So, 60 mph blowout on the pusher tire today. A little exciting, but no terror. Just an “Aw, shit” and ease on to the shoulder. Took maybe a half hour to swap wheels. What was different was that three other riders stopped to see if I needed help. I didn’t but it was nice that someone finally stopped.

Anyway, we’ve had a ton of rain this month and the ground is saturated. That made using my little scissor jack a bit dicey. I finally found something the owners manual was good for.

Took the Chevy in for some much needed maintenance yesterday. Too bad I had forgotten that I needed to pick up the 1x8 shelving for the garage. Ural to the rescue.

Kind of wish I hadn’t picked the hottest day of the year to install those shelves. I was glad when I ran out of brackets.

I saw a Ural with side car waiting in line for the Galveston Ferry last weekend. He was getting tons of attention.
-I was leaving the ferry or I would have stopped and checked it out.
