3000 lumen LED headlight from tripage

I found an H4, 3000 lumen, 40W LED headlamp on a TU250x forum. It was originally developed for the Yamaha FZ-09, but will work in any H4 lamp that has room for the heatsink and wiring, like the TU250x or the RX3.

I ordered one for my wife's bike. At 40 watts, with an external heatsink, it will run much cooler than a 55/65W halogen.

The lamp is available from tripageled.com for $50 + shipping.

More pics to follow!

Installation in the RX3 is easy. Since the LED is only 40 Watts, you don't have to cut a hole in the back for ventilation, but I recommend it. I already did that to cool off my 55/65W Silverstar halogen.

Here are the installation steps:
  1. Remove the 9 screws from the rear cover of the headlight assembly.
  2. Detach the square, 3-prong electrical connector from the back of the lamp.
  3. Remove the rubber boot.
  4. Twist off the white plastic backplate behind the lamp to remove it.
  5. Remove the original lamp and set it aside. (Don't touch the glass bulb of a halogen lamp with bare fingers)
  6. Unscrew the LED's heatsink and set it aside.
  7. Insert the H4 LED lamp. Thread the lamp's pigtail through the white backplate and twist it on securely.
  8. Thread the lamp's pigtail through the rubber boot and reinstall the boot. With scissors or an Xacto knife, cut a small notch for the wire to sit in.
  9. Screw the heatsink onto the back of the LED.
  10. Carefully attach the LED pigtail to the wire for the capacitor box. The 4-pin connector is directional, so look for the slot to line it up. Then screw the locking cap into place.
  11. Plug in the square, 3-prong plug into the end of the capacitor pigtail.
  12. Reattach the rear cover, making sure the LED pigtail is completely inside the cover.

If you cut the hole in the back cover of the headlight, the back will look like this.

The front will look like this. Unlike some LED headlights that have 3 sets of LEDs in a triangle or pyramid, the Tripage LED only has two - top and bottom.

Here are the low beam light patterns for my Silverstar Ultra 55/65W (top) and the Tripage LED (bottom). You can't tell from my crappy pictures, but both lights are very white and provide nearly the same illumination. But there are differences ...

The Silverstar's light pattern has a straight cutoff at the top, to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. There is also a dark spot in the center (from a coating on the lamp) and two shadows running diagonally down away from the center.

The Tripage LED pattern is rounded at the top and has no shadows. It's a very consistent, bright beam from top to bottom. It's actually too bright to look at directly. I'm pretty sure the low beam could blind oncoming drivers. The high beam will definitely burn out their retinas.

Ultimately, while the Tripage LED provides brighter and more consistent lighting than my Silverstar, I can't recommend it for onroad use in the RX3.

With the RX3's clear glass and without a flat cutoff and front shield on the LED, I believe this 3000 lumen point source of light will blind oncoming traffic or at least be extremely distracting.

However, I did go ahead and install it in my wife's TU250x. Her headlight uses a fresnel lens to disperse and focus the beam pattern, so oncoming traffic won't see a point source of light, but just a bright 7-inch headlight.

I put the Silverstar Ultra back in the RX3. It provides a nice, bright beam pattern that is far superior to the stock 35W lamp. However, I am convinced that I need accessory lighting to light up the side of the road. The stock headlight alone doesn't provide enough light to the sides.

Detours, 3000 lumen, holly smokes Batman... What are you intending to light up and vaporize with that?

I don't think I could use that much power here on our Philippine blacktop, by the time I get to the end of the light path, the substandard material will have melted and I will end up sinking the front end of the bike into the melted tar pit, fly over the handle bars and end up being a tar baby...

And before I can get back to the Orange Carabao the tar will have hardened and the bike will become a giant monolith dedicated to the substandard materials and workmanship of the Philippine road departments.

But maybe not on picture halogen road lateral lighting a bit better than Led (i think) \, maybe LED need optical setting

Detours,

As always, thank you for sharing the good information, and the excellent photographs. As the technology continues to advance, we will keep looking for a suitable LED bulb for the RX3 headlight.

Thanks! There's a lot to like about this headlamp. If it had a square cutoff at the top of the light pattern and a small shield at the front of the LED, I could absolutely recommend it for the RX3. But having been blinded by oncoming aftermarket lights, it's a no-go for me.

I installed the Cree Speedmetal 2200 lumen H4 bulb on my RX3. The light is a huge improvement over stock but I noticed the high beam doesn't make a damn bit of difference. I believe its because of the internal shape of the headlight. Parker74 ran into a guy who I believe got a bike from the second shipment which had the Canadian version headlight. I'm wondering if the updated headlight would now allow the high beam to work with the new LED light?

Yeah, not safe for asphalt, but on the other hand, it might dry out your muddy trails

That's an interesting thought about the reflector on the new headlight design. There was a pic of it here somewhere ... I'll look for it.

Here's a link to the Canadian Headlight thread.

http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=15277

Looking at the photos, it's difficult to tell if the new headlight will work any better with LED bulbs.
