I have been (re)assimilated! Zongshen GS250

It looks pretty good for $200 gentlemen!

I am pleased to know its a cousin to Brother Spud's outstanding GY200. Knowing this is a Yamaha clone is great news. :P

It has nice tripple disc brakes, upside down forks, cool matte two tone paint, a super comfortable seat, what looks like an aluminum swingarm, very nice alloy wheels and Cheng Shin tires, and a halogen headlight.

The prior owner said it needed a coil because it did not have spark so I bet it's the CDI 8) . The fuel was not stabilized when parked a year ago so I anticipate a carb cleaning in my future too . Almost not a scratch on it, no leaks. Crack in windscreen, tip missing on clutch lever, and it will need a batteryt I'm sure. Other than that I'm good to go.

Thank God I know a Zongshen parts dealer! :P

I just powerwashed it and it cleaned up real nice. 8)

Which oil filter? What are the valve clearance specs? I assume I set them the same as Spud's Zong tutorial.

I'll pull the battery and put in on the charger and hope for the best. If I confirm there's no spark, which I expect, I'll get a new CDI and start from there.

I'll change the brake fluid, replace the gas, set the valves, fix a crack on the inner rear fender, check the electrics, oil and adjust the chain, and get her ready to run.

It seems to be a fine machine. So far the build quality is the equal of Q or a Zong GY or any inexpensive japabes machine.

Are you sure you want to take on another project bike, Brother Bill? :roll: :?: I will be glad to take this bike off your hands, and pay you an additional $25 for your time, gasoline, et cetera. The Zongshen Sticky in the Dual Sport Forum is your new, best friend, Doc! Oil filter information, valve clearance specs, et cetera, should be exactly the same for your 230cc Zongshen engine.

It also appears you might have the same, inverted forks as my Zongshen 200GY-2. Please take off the seat, and the plastic; I would love to see photos of your naked Zong! Take it off! Take it all off! :oops: :roll:

I started taking it apart. Here's the CDI, what looks like a turn signal beeper I'll disconnect, and the battery and RR. The carb is made in Japan but I don't know what brand. Engine numbers included if it helps you guys dig up info for me. :P

X2, multiplied to the nth degree! One thing is certain; when I replace the 196cc, ZS167FML engine in my Zongshen 200GY-2, I am going to install this 230cc, ZS172FMM engine, for an immediate, 17 percent increase in power!

Round these parts, for $200 you might get that frame from that bike that W&G bought for the engine... Incredible deals in the US.

First of all, I believe I know why the bike won't start. Your CDI unit, which appears identical to mine, seems to have a bulge where the capacitor burst. If you replace the CDI unit, the bike should start. You also appear to have the same regulator/rectifier.

You have a Teikei, MV30 carburetor, slightly larger than my Zong's Teikei, MV28 carburetor. All the Zong carburetor information I posted in the Zong Sticky applies; you can use the same Mikuni jets.

One of your TK, MV30 carburetor photographs is upside down, Doc. Here's the left side of the carburetor, shown right side up.



The Teikei, MV28 carburetor on my Zong is virtually identical to the Teikei, MV28 carburetor on the current, 2010, Yamaha TW200 motorcycle. Your ZS250GS has a slightly larger, Teikei, MV30 carburetor. You got Zongshen quality for your $200, Brother Bill.

Your ZS250GS swingarm should also fit the ZS200GY-2, dual sport motorcycle, Doc. I think your street bike might employ a progressive shock linkage. When you have time, please post photos of the swingarm, rear wheel, shock linkage, et cetera. We might discover an easy way for Zongshen 200GY-2 owners to upgrade their rear suspensions!

The smaller, ZS200GS motorcycle is very popular in the Philippines. Here's a link to a popular, Philippino motorcycle forum. I imagine the ZS200GS bike employs the same, ZS167FML engine as my Zongshen, 200GY-2 motorcycle.

The ZS250GS appears to employ the same stator and magneto as my ZS200GY-2 motorcycle. Therefore, the left crankcase cover, and sprocket cover from the ZS250GS should fit the Zongshen, dual sport motorcycle. Instead of modifying the 200GY-2, left crankcase cover, Zong dual sport owners should be able to purchase the ZS250GS parts instead.
