The CX experienced two of the hottest and most humid days so far this year and didn't miss a beat.

I better see if I can scrounge a pair of TEK coils from Japan as backups because the ones I pulled got aimed towards the trashcan.

DPL... this is kind on the lines of Dave Ramsey's, "go out and kill something and drag it home"(referring to working).

Since i acquired this riding hobby/addiction, I'm finding it harder to hunt!

crap, speaking of, i gotta go to work

I almost choked when I finally found a NOS pair of TEK coils and saw the price. Let's go for Emgo coils instead.

I've had a couple no start/hard start episodes since I swapped out the Russian coils for the stock coils. Each time was after the bike was warmed up. After it cooled down, it would go gangbusters. Did some checking around and found that the Emgo 24-71532 seems to be the go to unit. It's a 'Universal' coil, 6 volt, 12 volt, points or CDI. It's also cheap. Less than $25 for a pair from Amazon.
'Universal' also means that it doesn't fit anything. So, I had to do some Macgyverin'.

Hindsight being 20/20, I should have just made a strap with threaded mounting holes for the coils and through holes for the frame, but I didn't. At the time, I was concerned about tank clearance.

I ended opening the holes in the laminated section to 6.5mm (I actually have a set of metric drills) for the 6mm mounting bolts.

I didn't need to worry. Perfect fit.

I didn't take the bike for a test run, I try to avoid riding on summer weekends here. Plus it is hot and sticky and I was in shorts and a t-shirt. Not my kind of riding attire. However, I did fire it up. Started quicker than normal and once it warmed up, I had to back the idle off a bit. The real test came once the bike reach operating temp. I shut it off, turned the key to run, poked the started button, and it fired right up. Several times.

If the weather is decent, I'll probably ride all week.

If it's like a typical China coil, you may be able to peel back the rubber boot and unscrew the plug wire from the coil. That allows you to screw an NGK wire in place, which is much more supple in colder weather. I suspect it is also a better conductor.

Looks like a nice clean fix.

Why not ride on weekends?

Weld-This cable seems not like the typical China coil, even though it's from Taiwan. Flexible with a copper core, a bit of a pain to get the caps started.

Doc-Way too much traffic and idiots(two and four wheeled)here on weekends. I'll ride on a weekend if I have a specific destination, but I'd just as soon avoid it.

Makes sense Cheezo.

On the motorcycle I can work with it better, but riding with crowds while on my bicycle makes me very uneasy. We have a nice 23 mile long MUP around the Columbia River here in town. I avoid it on summer weekends. I call it amateur hour ;-)

I know where you're coming from, Doc. There's a 75 mile long trail down hill from the house that runs from the Wisconsin state line to Montgomery, IL. I'm nowhere near it after 10am on a Saturday or Sunday.

Crappity crap crap crap.

That number on the lower right, 174.3, should almost be double. Dead low speed source coil=no run Maggot.

Started running really bad yesterday and died as I pulled into the shop at work. No go now. The numbers are the results of a resistance test I did this morning on the stator. The low speed source coil provides juice to the cdi to make things run under 5000 rpm and has failed.

All these numbers, save for 7/5 and 8/9, show that the ignition parts of the stator are marginal at best. That's a common problem with the G47 stator. That said, the charging side of the stator works great.

Weighing my options on what I'm going to do.

How hard is to get to on that Guzzi style engine installation?

Based on your message not all that easy...

It's a weekend job if I decide to replace the stator with another G47, which seems more and more unlikely. Requires dropping the engine, draining coolant and oil; removing the water pump along with it's plumbing, the starter, shift lever, and output shaft. That's just to get the rear cover off to access the stator. Replacing the cover requires a new cover gasket, and new seals for the water pump and it's plumbing.

Other options are the Ignitech unit. http://www.ignitech.cz/en/vyrobky/bi...x500/cx500.htm It replaces the cdi and it's plug n' play as long as the stator can put out 12 volts, but relies on the CX trigger coils, which are getting long in the tooth and new ones are not available. If the trigger coils crap out, the Ignitech is a paperweight.

The next options are from Rae-San. Using the complete Rae-San Hall Effect CDI set up or replacing the triggers with the Rae-San Hall Effect trigger and using the Ignitech. http://www.rae-san.com/products/cx-500-cdi-ignitions/
It's not quite plug and play. It also requires dropping the engine, but that's as far as it goes. It replaces the trigger coils with a timeable Hall Effect sensor and a pair of GY-6(now ain't that familiar)cdi units, one for each cylinder.

Weighing the Pros and Cons, the complete Rae-San kit looks like it may be my best bet.
