Da Baby Wrangler
AKA Mrs. C’s new Renegade. It’s not a Wrangler, not by a long shot. But it has much better road manners and has this odd thing called “good gas mileage”. We have stopped for the night on our two day drive to Maine for Thanksmas with all the kids and grandkids. We covered about 700 miles, or so, and are averaging a very un-Jeep like 29.5 mpg. This little booger has a tiny fuel tank, 12.7 gal/49L. Gassing up doesn’t take long, so you look at the pump, double take, and say “That’s it?”
It’s got a nice ride, so we don’t feel like we have had the snot beat out of us like 400 miles in my Wrangler does to us, either. Sat/nag and wi-fi is pretty snazzy, too. No, Bruce, I’m not getting rid of my Wrangler. I don’t see the Renegade dragging 40’ felled trees around my property.

It’s clearly time to move on from that Wrangler .

We had a rental 2018 Hyundai Tuscon midsize SUV and got 31.9 mpg running around town. Admittedly, it was a top line model and a boring vehicle without features we like. It had haunted seat warmers too.

That Renegade is really thrifty. The savings in fuel cost (compared to a Wrangler) in a few years could buy me a nice motorcyle

Weld, I think the Renegade has the "Tiger Shark" 2.4 liter 4 popper....but I may be wrong.
Cheesy, my Patriot has the same itty-bitty gas tank (average 25 mpg highway). Though the cheap fill-ups are nice, doing 170 miles a day, I fill OFTEN. Glad to hear it's been a nice rig so far.

TigerShark 2.4l paired to a 9 speed auto. So far, our best run was 316 miles on a tank.
The little poop earned its keep today. There is a snow storm happening where we are staying in Maine. Getting out to the main road requires a 1.2 mile slog on an unplowed dirt road complete with a 13% grade to climb. Two wheel drive without studs or chains wouldn’t cut it today. My son in law tried with his rental Grand Caravan and slid back down the hill, slowly, and into the ditch. The Renegade went up the hill like nobody’s business. I took it, with my eldest riding shotgun, to get her oldest from school about 70 miles away. Roads weren’t bad getting there, but were horrible on the drive back. Almost no problems with the crappy conditions. Did get sideways once when I dropped the right rear tire in a ditch because the clown coming towards me wanted both lanes. Did a controlled slide down the 13% grade with ABS doing its job.

The “Haunted” seats have me a little worried!

Nope, the Tiger Shark 2.4 is different than the Patriot 2.4. I had a Patriot (brand new) for a year and a half before I foolishly got the bug to buy an ST and traded it off.

The seat warmer buttons are low on the dash. Shifting, knees, using the cubby hole, anything would bump the buttons unknowingly and set my @$$ on fire or the passengers. It was still pretty warm weather here when we had the rental Tucson. |

Ahh ok, wasnt sure as the Tiger Shark was out around the same time in the Darts so i was not sure if the larger Lancer chassis based vehicles like the Avenger, Patriot and Compass got it or not.

Back home after a marathon 21 hour drive from Maine. I think we’ll keep it.

The difference is in the head. If they changed the bottom end, it's visually undetectable. The 2.4l Patriot motor (known as the WGE or World Gas Engine), is a project between Hyundai and Mopar. Built here in the US. It's a DOHC and the head flow is front to rear so the exhaust is next to the firewall. On the Tiger Shark, they made it a SOHC and reversed the head flow so the exhaust comes out the front side of the motor. It was odd to me that they went from two cams to one cam but it developed about 12(?) more HP. These motors, both the WGE and Tiger Shark are brutally reliable and can put up with tons of abuse, if maintained properly. I beat the snot out of mine.
