Weird speedo readings..

Hey everyone! I expected the speedometer to be a little off, but I rode for about 70 miles today and noticed that my speedo was indicating that I was hitting 80mph+ at some points...

I do have the 17t front sprocket in there.

I didnt have a way to verify or deny the speed, I was coming up on cars very quickly though in a 60mph zone if I stayed in the throttle.

Anyone else experience this?

get a gps speedo app for your phone that will record your top speed. I think some of the drag race 1/4 mile apps should so it also.

then you'll at least know your top speed.

I used to put $10 bicycle speedometers on all my bikes, accurate and cheap but no back light. Now I use old free Android phones mounted to the handlebars with a $2 ball mount, running a speedo app.

Is it in KPH like most CB's?...or does the Hawk show both KPH and an MPH scale? I know most odometers click off KPH.

Pull your speedo cable, wipe it down really well and grease it. I did mine on Q just this week again and it really stabilizes the speedo needle for a more accurate reading. All of the CB cables that's I've pulled don't come greased or lubed. Some will snap in short order.

It "says" its in MPH, but yeah I really need to get a phone mount and check.

Good idea, it seems to operate very smoothly (Like a car speedo), but I think its like 20mph off. Which is weird because at low speeds it seems accurate.

Ill pull it apart tonight and check.

Just a heads up if you haven't already done one (or many) before. Pull the cable sheath from the wheel end and the cable slips right out of the sheath.

Cool, thanks. So it just unscrews from the front wheel side?

Depending on your particular setup, the cable sheath either unscrews from the speedo drive at the wheel hub or it has a little locking screw running across it like my Q. I think the Hondoids just unscrew. The cable will have "square" ends that lock into both the speedo head and the speedo drive. Be careful not to kink it. After you clean and lube, carefully slide the cable back into the sheath and twist it a little until you feel it fit into the speedo head, then fit it into the square hole in your speedo drive and rethread the retainer.
It's so simple you'll probably service it annually....and your cable should last a very long time.
