Tool Kit

I am a new RX3 owner. Is there a set of specific tools to have on hand at all times. Thanks.

And a trailer to carry all that gear......

Maybe you should carry a spare bike on that trailer, too.

Or better yet, have Joe #2 accompany you at all times.

No offense, Joe....

There is no one else I would rather have along on a trip than you....and all your gear/tools.

I'm a bit of a tool hound. I have 7 rolling tool chests filled with all kind of stuff I never use.

Not for on the road, but in the shop.

Out of all the tools, I find that I can perform nearly all the maintenance on my RX3 with a 1/4" socket and bit set, plus a few box wrenches.

Anyone else have some favorite motorcycle tools?

jb

I knew about the mini kit. I wanted to refrain from saying "cheap chinese crap" since I just bought a chinese motorcycle.

The bikes are one thing BUT the tool kits are another.

Thanks for the replies.

Regarding tools, it's not about the country of origin but the standard to which they're made. It sounds like you would be surprised by the origin of many high quality tools these days.

Tools

No matter how many tools you carry it's always possible that something will go bad and you cannot fix it. Joe #2 has enough stuff to reduce that possibility down to near zero but still it exists. You will find that for most maintenance you will be using the same tools over and over. 8mm socket and phillips screwdriver along with a couple common allen wrenches will take the bike down to bare bones. After that you can decide exactly how prepared you need to be. Personally, I want to be able to fix a flat tire even though I have not had to actually do that for at least 10 years (and then on a tubeless tire). Oh, and most of my tools were made overseas.

Just for grins I'd recommend making a list of all the tools needed to do your 500 mile service. You'll find that it will be a short list.

Opps, I should have written "all the tools you actually use for the first service".

It's amazing what you can actually accomplish with limited resources when put to the test for real, been there already

I am Joe #2! He's Joe #1. Not offended at all. All this fits in a very small space since i have the two tool tubes. And, as I said this would be a FULL list depending on the trip type. This would support me for a RTW type trip. I carry various versions depending on what I'm doing. I wanted to provide a full list of moto tools that I'd researched so he could scroll through them and select what he felt was right for him and things like looking at the list of allens and sockets, box end's he'd know what sizes the bikes takes. Since I'm doing things like riding to Alaska I will have almost all of this stuff with me.
Funny thing is I'm like this with most of my activities and get teased often but it's funny how many times those folks end up coming to me asking for tools or parts to get them going again and generally needing me to do the work...

Joe2 mexgyver is the guy you want to have around if you break down. Way above my pay grade in all things geekish and practical. We make fun of him but he was the one patching things together when needed and giving a thesis on the whys and wheres of all things moto ,technical and a encyclopedia of knowledge. For such a little guy you wonder where he stores all the info he has gathered . We be fox hole buddies from our Baja trip and that's all I got to say about that rj

I know the feeling. It's how I became "2LZ". I was everyone's roadside wrench.

Joe # 2, Your very complete list of tools is still missing two that I would never go without on a long / RTW type trip.

Cell Phone & SPOT

Many neglect to think of a cell phone as a tool but it can teach you how to repair, provide light, digitally store a copy of your manual & maps, send pictures of a failure to a mechanic for advice as many other things.

Because you are a fixer. Trying to make things right in practical and probably personal situations too. Just own it
