How to Prime New Hawk Engine?

Hey everyone! I just picked up a used hawk with a blown engine last Thursday. I've gone through all the electrical and am now ready to pull the trigger on a replacement engine from txpowersports. I do have a few questions, however.

1) Does the engine come primed with oil and ready to simply drop in and start?
2) If not, how would I go about priming the engine? Pull off the spark plug wire, disconnect the fuel line, and crank it?

Thank y'all for the help in advance!

It may come with oil. But after you install the engine, drain the oil. Replace it with good oil (about 1 quart).

Regarding starting, if the carburetor float bowl is filled with good fresh fuel (turn on the petcock), the engine won't need priming (fuel). Just use the choke.

If you really want to prime it, pull the plug, leave the ignition off and with oil in the motor simply turn it over for 10 to 15 seconds, give it a break, repeat. After that simply put the plug in and go to start it like normal.

Although the oil is pumped, it's really more of a "splash" oil system, so hand-turning the engine won't do a whole lot to distribute the oil everywhere it goes. Make sure it's full of good oil and start it. Then it'll get splashed around in a second and a half or so.

The oil is pumped to: the head/valves - which falls back down over the cam and cam followers, through the crank to all the bearings (crank acts as a slinger with the run-off), through both transmission shafts to their respective bearings, and through the case to drain on top of the transmission gears at key points.

It definitely can't hurt to prime it.

Thank you everyone for the help! Just a week or so until I can order the new one, I’m a lot less nervous about it now.
