Nibbi ignition coil.

Just a quick overview and install notes for your viewing and reading pleasure.

Yes, since I am removing the Nibbi carb on my bike for now (more on that in another thread of mine) I figured, what the heck let's put another Nibbi part on it to keep things balanced.

Well, no actually, my stock ignition coil had been getting weaker and weaker over the last couple of months leading up to putting it away for winter. So instead of going for just another typical cheap coil, I figured I would spend twice as much on one because it says Nibbi on it... Well, that and I actually trust their quality control. I have been nothing but impressed with their carburetor and the intake that they make, so I figured it couldn't hurt.

So, here it is side by side with the stock coil. It is in fact a tad bit bigger, but not by a whole lot.

A few things worth mentioning about installing the coil.

First, this is not a direct bolt in replacement. You will need to cut and add some female connectors for the blade connections on the Nibbi coil. For the ground you could simply make a jumper wire with a ring terminal to connect with the other ring terminal if you don't feel like cutting. You could do the same for the power side with a bullet connector on one end and a female on the other. I just cut and crimped because I like simplicity.

The top connector just also barely touches the mount tab when you bolt it up, so a couple of washers between the coil and mounts solves this.

The only other minor thing I had to adjust for was the bolt spacing of the mounts vs. the coil. It was maybe half a mm off, which was just enough to make bolting it on almost impossible. I solved this with a rat tail file and a couple minutes of work elongating both holes just a teeny bit. This may or may not be an issue with other bikes, but it is something to be aware of.

So far I have not be able to test it as my battery ist kaput, but I will report back once I am up and running. My goal was not to really gain any power as that is just silly. My hope is that it simply provides a more powerful and stable spark at higher RPM than even a good stock coil could provide. We shall see.

So after a couple hundred miles of carb tuning and general messing about I can conclude that this coil is performing beautifully, and at least stronger than my stock coil. It is able to ignite and power through rich conditions a lot better than the old was even when new. My top end pull is not only restored, but actually stronger than before. My bike definitely pulls a lot better above 7000 than it did before, and up to the rev limiter in 5th with much greater ease and smoothness.

That doesn't mean that the stock coils are necessarily bad either, but I can say for certain that mine was getting weak for sure now.

The only thing left to discover is how long it holds up for.

Did you change the plug cap or did you use the one that came on the nibbi coil? I have the same coil installed but was wondering if I need to change the plug cap. I've heard all sorts of things about longevity issues if using resistor cap and plugs with the cdi units. I do have the ngk plug installed and haven't had any issues but figured Id better look into it preemptively.

Using the same plug cap I had on before. No resistor in the cap, but the plug is iridium and thus is a resistor plug.
