And now for my next problem!! (end float in gearbox shafts)

I have the motor back together and in the frame, and I now have a new problem that's of my own making. While I was re-assembling the motor I noticed excessive end float of the gearbox output shaft (4mm), there were signs that one of the gears had been touching the casing. I think that the RH bearing has been pushed too far in the casing. I have made a pair of washers to take up the end float. Now finding neutral is very difficult and when it is found there is a slight clicking noise which I think is the dogs touching. The obvious answer would be take it to bits and remove the washers, but it don't seem logical to leave the gears and shaft floating about.

Jonathan.

All I know is very old school.

First thing to come to mine is 2 washers moved the gear mass to far to one side. how about one on each end? the other is to dye the gear set and see what needs to move. but all means taking it apart again.
