petcock

how the heck do i know which way the petcock is pointing. is it the long ended part that needs to be set to open or reserve, or does the short side indicate the setting. I know this sounds moronic, but can someone tell me?

Unless it's bass-ackwards like both my 'kwads'. My bike is normal though.

There is an arrow on the Tap arm that you turn to turn on & off the fuel. If you look at the petcock it has a cup on the top & bottom or it says On & Reserve, they came both ways. One cup has a line at the top that is the On position when the Tap arm arrow is pointed towards it, visa versa for Reserve, (cup is at half), off is the Horizontal position.
I'm not degrading, but the dealer you purchased your bike from should have told you this and it shows it in the owners' manual.

For a while I didn't know either, (I didn't want to ask.)so I ripped the petcock apart and put it back together. Now I know how the pointer works, and how the gas flows when the pointer is at different positions. You usually get a good idea how something works if you take it apart, clean it, and slap it back together. Bike fixing is the only thing keeping me sane, we have LONG winters here in Toronto. I remember when I first got my china bike. It took a long time before I finally put wrench to bike. It was the first bike I ever fixed and had to do it myself. No cash, no experience, no biker buddy who has fixed bikes all their lives. RED200?, gave me the nudge.

He said, " The work has to be done on these bikes, it's you or the mechanic. Dig in and get fixing, if you get stuck, that's what we are here for. These bikes are dead easy to learn how to ride and fix. This is the best site for chinabike info. If you get stuck, try to work it out yourself. If you have to ask a question, make your titles as specific as you can. He was a litte(LOT) more blunt, but he was right. You just bought a motorcycle fixing course, all equiptment included. My 2 cent? If you have a digi, or video camara, take pics as you dismantle, helps to know how things go back. "What side of the wheel does the spacer go?" Look at the pic. I'm a newb, you can PM me anytime. N2r.

EJ I did not receive an owners manual, a tool kit, or anything else. I just got a bike for $1576. I reckon I need to find out if they forgot to give me these items which I am now assuming ship with the bike to their dealership. Thanks for pointing this out.

Hi zapkin
Yes you should have received all of those things. The Dealer is also Responsible to Register your bike with American Lifan, when you bought it.

I always give my customers everything they are supposed to get with their vehicles. I include a copy of the vehicle registration that I mail in to whatever company they purchase a vehicle from me for. American Lifan has one single thick registration paper... but I copy it and give one to the customer now also.
You could call American Lifan to see if it's registered, because if it's not I couldn't do warranty work on it if you broke down up here.
I hope that this helps.

I don't think the registration will be a problem. I saw the MSO and everything. Also I contacted AL before purchasing this bike to verify that this dealer was in fact a AL dealer. I reckon they just forgot to give me manual. I think there will be no problem getting it from them, but I may have trouble figuring out exactly what the english translation means

Don't worry, "Engrish" isn't too hard to decipher/translate
