Battery Opinions

I'm starting the process of making my XR250 street legal and making a parts list of everything I need. Since the electrical system is very basic ( kick start only) I don't think I will need too much of a battery. I want a AGM battery and as small as I can get so I can cram it in under the seat. My question is, Have you bought a good AGM battery that you would recommend that's on the cheap and is relatively small in size? Thanks

I put this battery in my HAWK over a year ago April and it comes off the trickle charger at 13 volts no issues. It was smaller than the original battery and I had to add some foam to fill the battery box.

I put this one in my Magician and ditto, no problems so far.

I think a good trickle charger is mandatory to maximize these small batteries life so I buy one of those too along with the battery. A few deep discharges and these small batteries are likely toast.

I got this one for the TBR7, thus far it works.

China Rider 27 is likely right, a few good discharges on these inexpensive batteries and likely does them in. I also use a trickle charger on any battery when parked and not driven daily.

Thanks guys for the input!
I have used the chrome battery before and it was excellent!
I haven't tried the Zipp battery before but looks good.
I think I'm going with the Weize that Chinarider uses, mainly because I found a perfect size I think.

I am going with this one
https://www.amazon.com/Weize-YTZ10S-...NsaWNrPXRydWU=

I will put the battery inside of the small apache case that Harbor freight sells, on the rear fender. It should work good

The Harbor freight solar batteries are super impressive and they are AGM.

me and my brother use the 35AH version for everything, even starting my 1991 4runner 3.0. They make a 10Ah version that I will be putting on my bike ASAP only like 1/4" bigger than stock battery. I suggest you give them a go.

Alternative option would be no battery at all and just run a bridge rectifier and a capacitor for DC power for said lighting.

Here in Illinois I was told that as part of the street bike conversion test the bikes lighting had to be able to stay powered for 20 minutes after the bike is off. I guess the reasoning is if you are riding at night and the bike dies people will still be able to see you if the lights are still on.

But looks like I'm dead in the water because I found out yesterday that Illinois no longer will allow a off road bike to be road legal under any circumstance.
So I have 2 options if I want to ride legally to the trails.

Option 1; A company called roadlegal.com guarantees you that they can get you out of state license and title for a poultry fee of $299

Option 2; Sell the XR and buy a road legal dual sport.
I'm leaning towards option 2

You can do option 1 yourself online by going the Vermont route. Regardless of your license plate status though, the local constabulary will likely still give you a hard time. Option 2 clears all that up rather neatly, but a dual-sport bike won't be as good off-road as a dedicated dirt bike, and won't be as good on-road as a dedicated street bike. It really depends on what you're preference is for how the bike behaves (if you buy a dual-sport and go that route) or how much hassle you're willing to put up with from the local cops if you plate the bike out of state. Personally, I wouldn't trade my DR650 for anything, but it's a really big monster of a beast to take blasting around the local trails. I use the Hawk for the local, quick run through the forest trips. In thinking about it, it sounds to me like you need at least TWO motorcycles! But I'm probably a little biased. Keep us posted on what you decide to do!

Thanks Emerikol good valid points!
I still have my 650 vstrom which is considered an adventure bike. I would consider more of an excellent street bike and I use it as such. I like the light, jump on and ride anywhere of a dual sport. I contacted Jeff at Peace as I was considering another Brozz but he doesn’t expect more stock until December, I’m a little impatient. There is also the possibility of the TT250 which came up for sale. I’ve been looking at the RXB as well. Not sure what to do yet
I absolutely love the XR, the motor is incredible and the bike is good at almost anything I’ve thrown at it! If I went the out of state registration route then if I get pulled over and they check my VIN for some reason, I could see them taking my bike and fining me out the ying yang. I would love to put it on the street I’ve rode it locally and even as low as it’s geared it will still break 65mph, I could easily see it cruising the 65mph roads with the proper gearing.

I bought a couple of Weize batteries. One for the Hawk and one for the ATV. The one on my Hawk stopped charging after about 4 months. I contacted the seller and the sent out another battery to me at no charge and no questions asked. One on the ATV still going strong.
