I'm sorry, I didn't add the spill was at 21min I think. I only watched it once. Not sure what happened.

I think he said it was about 5 years old

The rider shooting the video almost lost it in the same spot by the look of the maneuver he did.

I was invited to a bicycle frame building seminar as a last minute thing yesterday. The weather wasn’t too bad, so I rolled the Ural out of the garage and rode the 75 miles to Whitewater, WI. Pretty much a straight shot from Chez Fromage.

Although not hands on, the seminar was pretty informative. Building my own custom frame is on my bucket list and I think I found my mentor. Saw several old friends there. The free food didn’t hurt either.

So, I step out to leave and it’s raining and windy. Oh, goody. Reach in the trunk to get my rain suit and there is only the jacket. I lent the pants to Mrs. C when she couldn’t find hers and they are still draped across the seat of the Honda where I’d left them. I guess I’m going to see how well the Ural leg guards work.

They work wonders. My pants stayed dry and I was relatively comfortable on the ride back. Something else, other than avgas, ethanol free fuel is not readily available in Illannoy, though it is plentiful in Cheeseland. I noticed that the engine ran cooler than usual. The nearest supply to me is half a Ural tank away. Kind of defeats the purpose but an occasional trip in the pickup with a 5 gal can might be done.

Did I ever tell you that Paul Brodie runs a frame workshop at the local university? Really nice guy, and considerably talented.
Interesting that the Ural ran cooler on ethanol-free fuel; I hadn't considered that.

Updated to LEDs all the way around.

Somewhere in the rigs' checkered past, an EL-13 signal relay replaced the Russian one. For whatever reason, a PO changed the pin out in the plug, So, when I plugged in the LED relay, nada. I figured I'd gotten a bum relay and I had to hit all three local auto parts stores before I found LED relays, starting with the least bling(NAPA)to the most bling(Auto Zone). Most bling had oodles of relays and is farthest from home. Pretty much giving up on my local NAPA.

When the second relay worked no better than the first one, it was time to check the pin out. I made some jumpers and dug out a VOM to verify the hot wire, then went to town. Took less than two minutes to verify that the pin out had been changed and another five to correct it. Chasing down the second relay took more time than diagnosing and fixing the plug. I have a spare relay now.

No light pics BB, but how about a damaged FD cover?

Crappity, crap, crap, crap, crap. Look at the shaft seal and you can see it's at an angle and the cover is cracked at the raised side of the seal.
Guess I'm pulling the FD and I think the $300 cover is toast. I really won't no for sure until I tear it apart but I won't hold my breath.

Can it be TIG welded?

Probably, Weld, but it is oil soaked aluminum. I’m hoping so, anyway. Maybe pressing in a machined insert. Anyway, checking all options before I bite the bullet. Start opening it up tomorrow.

Don't think I'm fixing this.

Here's the cause. Broken bolt head.

Did some calling around and found an NOS cone for fifty bucks. Guy I got it from is a Ural dealer who also buys stock from closed dealerships and takes in wrecked bikes and pieces them out. He also told me that what happened was something that happened on early 2007 bikes, lucky me. Told me to ditch the bendable sheet metal nut locks and 8.8 bolts used on the ring gear and go with 10.9 bolts and Loctite instead.

One the plus side of all this, I found that my ring and pinion gears are in perfect shape and it looks like I only need to replace the outer bearing and seal in the cone. The inner bearing is sealed and is running smooth as silk. The outer bearing isn't sealed and has had the ground up bolt head soup running through it.

Funny thing, there was never any indication that anything was wrong until I drained the oil.

If I manage to get this back together next weekend, great. If I don't, I at least got the Maggot running.
