Hawk 17t and sprocket cover

So I am almost finished putting the bike together, so only a year then!!!!

When I was all gung-ho I read all sorts of posts and I remember contradictory advice/info.

So I have a 17T with a 428 chain, I went to put the sprocket cover on and it wouldn't go, so do I have to attack with a sharp instrument or can it be finagled on?

Any pictures or points to older posts (preferably with pictures, that still are accessible).

It seems hit or miss, which I can only assume is due to casting variances. On my last Hawk I had to clearance the sprocket cover by basically grinding back/cutting away the small part of the cover that was contacting the chain.

The issue is only when installing the cover. If you finagle it enough and give it a good thumping it will go on and the chain will not rub at all, but then getting it back off will be a bit of a chore as well.

Hopefully somebody has a picture showing where the contact point is, but if not, you can likely see some witness marks where the chain has been touching the aluminum.

At present the sprocket, chain and cover have never been assembled so no wear marks. This is the first time for these items.

Not wear marks. Witness marks. When you go to try and put the cover on and it gets forced against the chain you should see light markings where the two contacted one another. They may be faint, but they will give you an idea of where the chain and cover are disagreeing with one another.

Gotcha, sorry its very late or early depending on how you want to look at it. :-)

I will have a go tomorrow and see what shakes.

wiggle wiggle try different positions. it took about 10 minutes for me to find that one tiny spot that it would slip on with.

I ground off a point that goes under the the starter to get just a little more room, still took a smack to get it on, but worked.

Thank you all. What I ended up doing was removing the chain fitting the cover and then feeding the chain in. We will see what problems that cause further down the road.
I'm going to do a bit of searching as I am sure the info is on the forum.but with the choke how do the positions work, up down middle on off half?

Found it

Stock PZ30 carb
- Lever down =chokeoff (open)
- Lever Middle = halfchoke(partially closed)
- Lever Up = Fullchoke(fully closed)
Mikuni VM26 "30mm"
- Lever down = Fullchoke
- Lever Middle = halfchoke
- Lever Uo =ChokeOff.

Glad I could help again! I remember having to make that distinction because for a while we had a small wave of people coming in here with "carb problems" and quite a few of them were riding around with the choke on thinking it was off.

I resemble that remark after swapping carbs. I took a permanent marker and put an arrow with 'off' on the float bowl.

I had the same clearance problem on my Magician when I changed to a 17T sprocket. First, I installed the cover with no chain installed. I placed a flat paint stir stick along the swing arm that slid forward until it hit the sprocket. Then I fed the chain forward along the paint stir stick until it hit the sprocket. Next, I rotated the sprocket from below with a screw driver, rolling the chain around the sprocket. Problem solved!

Has anyone come up with an alternate way or method for an easier way to work the choke? It's so hard to get my hand in their while riding to disengage the choke.
