My 250 Apollo RX mods

Hi All,

I purchase this bike from David (Mudintent) with the following mods.

* Removed Catalytic Converter
* Mikuni Clone 30mm Carb (original non-adjustable included)
* Added 12T front Sprocket (original 14T Included)
* Custom blue 48T rear Sprocket from PMP sprockets (original 38T included)
* Installed Gold O-ring 530 pitch chain
* Removed EPA crap i.e SAIS (kept if you really want)
* Installed two Amazon special 72watt light bars (extremely bright)

I spent a bit of time lurking on the board and gaining knowledge about this bike. I have owned three and four wheelers but never a dirt bike. This is a great community and I have learned a lot.

Since I have started on my own mods.
  • Sourced and installed a plastic gas tank.
  • Installed a 2009 Honda CRF250R rear shock. No welding needed as I have seen done in other threads.
  • Installed a custom K&N air filter with pre filter using a 1.75in 45 degree silicon coupler.
  • Upgraded to a 12V LiFePO4 150CCA motorcycle battery 12V 3Ah (weighs nothing)
  • installed an after market cdi with adjustable timing.
  • re-did some of the wiring and clean it all up with wire loom.
  • Wrapped the front half of the exhaust with a titanium 1in lava wrap.

I've been pretty busy lately so I have not ridden it since the install of the shock and new filter. Just sitting on it though I can tell it is a night and day difference over the stock kidney killer shock!

One question regarding the starter, it seems very weak and can barely turn the motor without attempting several tries. It has 10 gauge wire. The battery helped some but it still seems really poor. Any thoughts as to what it could be or how I could improve it?

Is the battery new?


The length of the cable and the diameter both come into play. How tough would it be to upsize while you are working on the new loom?

Yes I bought the battery new. It's 150ca it works better than the regular acid battery that was on there.

The starter/solenoid cable is already 10gauge I thought that would be sufficient since I see that is what everyone upgrades to.

Was there any modification required to run the CRF250r rear shock? Will the stock air box, and battery box work with the honda shock, or will they require the air filter/battery mods similar to what you did?

I like the stance the rear of the bike has. Looks like it raised it up a bit.

Where did you get the plastic tank, and did it require any mods to make it fit?

Love the stance of your bike! The wrap looks really good.
Do you have another battery you can test with? Have you tried booster cables from a car battery? Failing that, perhaps the stock solenoid isn't working properly. They're cheap and plentiful online.
Do you have a link to the silicone coupler?
Please tell us the dimensions of the new shock.

Minor mods are required to install the shock.

You will need to grind down the top tab where the shock mounts on the upper frame to clear. You will need to notch the frame on the side where the bladder is.

I also cut down the bottom mount on the shock, and drilled a new mounting hole up higher to shorten the overall length. This shock is much longer than the stock shock.

If you look at the pictures closely you will see the mods.

I do not see any reason this would not work with the stock air box and battery. That being said I did not attempt it.

The gas tank requires no mods. I found it here.

I can try and measure the shock later when I get home. It's just a regular CRF shock with the legs cut down on the bottom and new mounting hole drilled.

Rcsup1: Could you measure the Honda shock from the center of the top mounting hole to center of the lower mounting hole?

I measured as best I could with it on the bike and it's aprox 17 1/4-1/2 inches eye to eye fully extended. I did have to push it down into place when I installed it, since it was maxing out the bottom link fully extended so it may be slightly longer uninstalled.

Rcsup1 could you get a closer shot of the frame mod you did. That kinda concerns me. I don't want to break the bike trying to fix it.

I set the sag on the shock last weekend and got a chance to take it for a quick spin. This is a night and day difference!!! So much more travel and just overall plushness! This is one of the best mods you can do to the bike!!! The factory shock is absolute garbage in comparison.

I left off the plastics thinking I might have to re-jet but honestly it still runs great! You can tell it's a tad bit leaner with a little poping on decel but it still starts right up half choke and has little to no hesitation when I crack the throttle and idles great. Dave really had the jetting on point. I'll play with the pilot screw and see what happens. I also need to install a new plug and read it after some runs.

It's cheap and works great advancing the ignition timing some. Probably another reason I'm getting away partly with the jetting untouched. Turning the screw counter clockwise advances, clockwise retards. The vendor claims from 15 to 20. If that's true your looking at 5 degrees.

I tried to upload a quick walk around vid of the idle and some free revving with no muffler. (Sound like a mini Harley) but keep getting this error:

Where did you get the shock? Every place I looked they are at least $600. Way out of my budget. If you have a deal please post a link.
