Port your number out so you don't lose it. No cable company has a foot print at the new place?

Okay, I’ll bite. What does “port your number” mean? I’m old.

After speaking with the Dish installer yesterday, we bagged on Hughesnet. He won’t use it. He recommended Xfinity or MediaCom.

As far as cable companies go, Comcast is here but we’d rather go without.

Unless hughesnet is the only option avoid it. While Comcast is the devil it does off some of the fastest speeds available.

You can port your phone number to another carrier. So you can take that number from att and put it on a cellphone, cell land line or to a voip service. It's easy to do as long as the att account is still active and you have the account number and security code/phrase used to access it.

The man cave. Still got work to do, but the big toys are there.

duck, thanks for the info. MediaCom is the other choice, has comparable speed to Xfinity and, apparently, is vying for position as the devils' favorite son.

Man I'm jealous. There's a house for sale right up the road from my office that's my dream house. 3 bedroom house with a 1200 sf garage/work shop and a 2 bedroom guess house sitting on 6.3 acres of land including stocked fishing pond. The only thing that's holding me back from buying it is the half million price tag. lol I guess I'm stuck with my 18x20 well ventilated shed.

Even better, hot water radiant heat in the floor. Right now, it’s set at 55F and it’s pretty comfortable to work in. Not T-shirt comfortable, but a sweatshirt with the sleeves hiked up is the uniform of the day.

We weren’t able to keep our home phone number because the new place is in a different area code. However, Mrs.C is having her number changed on her cell to our old number.

Yeah landline carriers can be dicks about it, they follow the area code plant. If you really want it on a "landline" all the cell carriers sell a cellular device that has an rj11 phone jack on it and you can use an existing landline phone. They are normally pretty reasonably priced. If you don't get a ton of spam calls moving it to a cell phone isn't bad. Just watch out, they might try to force her line into a contract.

Well, phone and internet has been an adventure.

We managed to keep our phone number by setting up a second line on my wife’s plan. The phones we bought for the house are both cellular and voip, depending on how the switch is set. It works.

As far is internet goes, Xfinity isn’t even available, nor is Raise Broadband. MediaCom is willing to run a new line to our place but might not get it in until spring. Looks like it will be a slow AT&T connection for the foreseeable future. I have no problem with it for now and I had to convince Mrs C that with Dish and cell phones, we didn’t need super speed.

Maybe.

Mrs. C says we are officially moved in. Now, we start getting the old place prepped to put it on the market.
Tomorrow, the grandkids from Maine will be here.

Still in recovery mode after 7 days of grandkids. It may be years before we have located every misplaced Lego.

I am getting an education in the Care and Feeding of Water Softeners. Also, we are learning all the short cuts and back roads to get from Point A to Point B. There are a lot. I’ve tried the local diner in town and it rates a big thumbs up. The local watering hole is pretty good, too.

I got the TV mounted over the fireplace but we still do not have internet. We gave up on AT&T. Their Customer Service is atrocious. I can see one work ticket falling through the cracks, but not two. It seemed like we were dealing with idiots. MediaCom should have us hooked up by next week.

We’ve started on prepping Chez Fromage for sale. Mrs. C is finally getting why I didn’t want to change things in that house for changes sake.
She’s been on my ass for years to change out the railing on the second floor and I refused after finding how things were done by the previous owner. Yesterday, she got her education. Railing on one side, piece of cake. Removed in less than an hour. Other side, three hours to remove it. Why? Because the dipsiht that installed it had no stud inside the wall to mount the wall post to. So, BEFORE the wallboard went up on the other side of the wall, a cross stud was put in. No real problem there, but Dipsiht then ran two 6” x 1/4” lag screws from the opposite side of the wall into the wall post instead of wall post to stud. Then wall boarded over the lags.
So, instead of just replacing the railing on that side, I now have a good 6” diameter hole in the wall board, on the wall post side, to repair. There’s a good two days added to a job I didn’t want to do in the first place.

I won’t even go into the electrical outlets she felt needed to be replaced. On the other hand, she should be dropping f-bombs herself by the time the place is sold.
