traded scrap for scrap?

A couple weeks ago my dad did some trading with the local scrap guy. The scrap guy had a 110cc 4 wheeler - my dad had some steel beams. The steel beams were worth more to the scrap guy than the ATV so they traded. Today dad brought the ATV over to my shop - we build firearms at the shop - we also cant resist things with engines. The ATV looked like it had been left out in the weather for a while but its complete. After removing all the plastic we cleaned the fuel tank (had a water/gas mixture) and the carb (same mixture). Luckly the water hadnt had enough time to get things really crusty in the carb. We blew out the carb, washed out the tank, messed with the wires alittle and BINGO - she started up and idles like its new. This engine is electric start only and the trans is automatic. Pictures tomorrow of the scrap for scrap ATV.

Scrap ATV pics

Heres a few pics of the Scrap ATV. The frame is kinda crusty in spots. The foot rest on one side broke off due to rust. The frame is getting sand blasted on Saturday then repaired. This thing looks like it was left out in the weather but not used - still has the tits on the tires.

Holy giant jigsaw puzzle!

Are you going to paint it or powder coat it? Does it need much repair before it's refinished (aside from the foot rest)?

frame repair

Its mostly the footrest repair - once its blasted then we will have to see if theres more fixen needed. The welding on the frame is real bad - third world country unskilled labor and MIG welders just dont mix well. Lucky for us the engine purrs like a kitten.

Loses power when hot

We have the scrap for scrap peace 110 ATV running only one problem - once it heats up it looses all power to the point you can hold the handle bars apply the throttle and it will stall out. The engine just stumbles and dies. Any suggestions? It will idle fine. When the engine is cold it also works fine power wise.

I have heard this can be a compression issue. I say measure the compression hot and cold and compare. I bet you'll get the answer.

hot and cold

I was thinking a valve adjustment issue maybe?

Also true. Indeed tight valves would get tighter when hot and cause compression loss and the symptoms you describe.

If it's not the compression or valves, I'd look at that horrible cat. That entire exhaust system is terribly restrictive. All I did was open up the muffler on my daughter's 50cc quad and it was a totally different machine.

the cat

The cat converter will most likely get cut in two pieces gutted out and welded back together this weekend. Earlier I cut off and pluged the air inlet ahead of the cat converter and opened up the inlet to the header at the cylinder - there was very liberal application of welding wire there.

cats gone - scrappy ATV

We removed the cat converter guts yesterday - not much to them - just a metal honeycomb. The scrappy ATV claimed it first victim though - my 11 year old son ended up on the ground - no major injuries luckly. I didnt see the actual crash but I think he lost control as he went from grass to pavement.
