Replacement rear calipers, even used ones, seem to be made out of Unobtainium. An hour of online searching turned up an OEM body for ‘You’re Shitting Me’ and a crusty used one for ‘You Really Aren’t Selling This, Are You?’ It’s easier to find body panels. I found the missing right rad shield for $13 shipped.

Looks like I need to get creative. I’ll try a left hand drill bit this morning. If that fail as I expect, there’s a bleeder repair kit winging it’s way here.

The rear caliper in question was only used in 96 and 97. So not common. It's also overly complicated, having to work as both a hydraulic brake and a mechanical auxiliary brake.
So, i'm not too concerned if I can't find one right away. The repair kit arrived today so I will have this fixed in the morning.

I keep a 45 year old Honda on the road, along with a niche sidecar rig, and a 1948 DeSoto. Sometimes chasing down out of production parts is part of the fun. So is finding a suitable modern replacement.

Can you swap to a newer or older rear brake setup that is more available? Or would that be prohibitively expensive to change out the whole setup?

Expensive? Probably not. Even going full hydraulic on the rear caliper wouldn’t be difficult, I could use a second small master cylinder with a check valve at the auxiliary brake pedal. The problem would be fitting it. Working on this thing is like wallpapering behind a toilet.

It is something I will consider as a future upgrade, though.

I finally finished yesterday afternoon.

I swear I had tools from every drawer of every box I own. I think I got more tired putting crap away.

The repair to caliper was pretty painless.

I would have had to pull the caliper even if the bleeder hadn’t broke off. There was dried crud in the vent that I had to drill through to clear it.

Bleeding was a pain in the ass and I may have to do it once more. Wished I could have used my power bleeder. That said, the heated grips work great and so does the tach/ hour meter. Which is all I wanted to effing do in first place.

The fastest way to find the tool you just lost is to go buy a new one. I did that with a nice pair of PVC pipe cutters. Couldn't find them for the life of me, so (swearing all the way to the big box home improvement store) I went and bought a new pair. Got home, took the new pair out of the package and set them down RIGHT NEXT TO THE PAIR I COULDN"T FIND!!!!
