Try to trace where the black wire goes. On most reg/recs a black wire is used as a sense wire. Not all have them as many newer designs are self sensing/regulating. On my goldwing I simply capped the sense wire off on the chassis harness when I upgraded to a newer combined unit.

Looks like you are right, it is a sense wire that is switched with the ignition switch.

All wired up and running, voltage is between 14.1v and 14.3v. No more exceeding 15v and no more below 13v.

Glad to hear it. I have found that blanking the sense wire and upgrading the reg rec makes for much more consistent and stable charge voltage, especially at low rpm.

Did you end up with it in the stock location or try to relocate it at all?

I couldn't find a good location for it other than stock so it is in the stock location.

I will be following in your footsteps with this upgrade as well. Honestly, the one thing I don't trust on my Hawk is the electrical side of things. I am sure it's fine, but...

I've found that the China R/R can drain the battery when it goes bad. Perhaps that's another reason for the sense wire, but I suspect it would kill the battery anyway.

I'm quite intrigued by this new R/R; may we see a pic of it installed?

Its a well known swap in the jap bike scene. I need to swap out the older fh011 I have on my vfr for the smaller newer one.

Next time I have the tank off. It was late and the sun was low when I finished so I didn't take any pics.
