CDI With Electronic Advance
I was wondering why the CDI module couldn't provide a spark advance based on the RPM since the module is already recieving pulses it could provide more advance as the higher the RPM goes instead of the fixed advance that these bikes seem to have. Then I ran across this on Ebay. Item number 290215292375 from the store "Discount Starter and Alternator" and I see they already have them. Does anyone know which one would fit our style of engine? I want one !
Thanks, Paul |

im not sure if that one is really aftermarket. I use to have a 400ex (thats what its for) and I bought one, it did not do much but back then they were $350 bucks. I guess you would need one for a XR200 or something similar in the XR class. That one is for a 400ex quad. If you read up there is a way to redrill the holes and advance the stock sensor, im looking into doing that when I get mine.

I think(pretty sure) this is the SITE I got mine from but like I said I have had it for almost a year now but it looks just like the blue CDI except they changed the TB graphic.
(it comes with a Y adapter) |

Has anyone tried an aftermarket CDI ?
So some bikes use electronic adavnce and some don't. But all engines need advance as the RPM'S increase. Has anyone tried an aftermarket CDI? It seems like a easy upgrade, much easier than filing the slots of the pick up bracket. I may go ahead and get one.
Thanks, Paul |

I'll have to find a way to secure the aftermarket CDI I got and give it a try but I doubt it will work on my bike.

it would be neat if someone made a custom bracket for the pickup with measurements for advance and retard.
Anyone try the advance box yet? I think I will do the pickup mod if no one has got a box to work. |

OK, so I bought this one...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:IT&ih=017 It said it was for a XR100 but I figured it was close enough. A paper that came with it should the advance started at 2000 RPM and ended at 4000 RPM with a total of 20 degrees advance. That matches the stock curve for Honda I saw somewhere online. I put the unit on and the bike fired up easy. The throttle seemed much more responsive. I went for a test ride and the bike definenitly has more power. When I used to pop the clutch I could lay a 4 to 5 patch in my clay driveway, now it is like 12 -15 feet. My driveway is all torn up !! When I stopped I checked the plug and it looked normal. The spark was much stronger though, a thick whitish/blue. Thats what started me looking for a CDI in the first place, I thought my spark was weak. I also found these CDI's during my searches... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:IT&ih=010 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA:IT&ih=014 So far I am happy. |

It is a Kazuma Cheetah 200. It looks like the lifan but I think it is made by Shineray. It has the 197cc engine with OHV. The model year is 2004. I bought it used and it never has run quite right. I've had the carb apart several times to clean it and have lowered the clip. It's running much better now. It still has a hesitation around 3/4 throttle but that is no big deal. I though I knew alot about engines but this bike has caused me to learn much more. I think my wife is jealous !

I think it would fit the Lifan. The one I bought was a replacement for a Honda and the plugs fit perfectly. What makes this an upgrade is that on the stock China bikes the timing is fixed around 11 deg BTC , but some bikes use a CDI that varies the advance with the engine RPM. And almost all the "performance" CDI's I looked at work the same way. If your bike has a 4pin plug next to a two pin plug it should work.
