Moose Racing air filter on XF/XP200.

I thought I would post some installation pictures of the Moose Racing filter I installed on my XF200. It's for a Suzuki DR200 as both bikes airboxes are the same. Well, kinda. The DR filter is removed/installed from the top while the XF/XP is from the side. Forchetto was the one that bought one first and discribed the trouble he had with removal and installation. Here's the old.

My solution. I removed the wingnut and replaced with nut. Now it's easier to start and tighten.


I changed the filter whille I was replacing the intake manifold. It was a whole lot easier with the carb out as I could align the bolt by sight rather than feel. The filter fits very well but care must be taken to make sure that the neoprene seal (black part) fits around the inside lip in the airbox. I could see why Forchetto was getting frustrated. I can't imagine how hard it was with the carb on and the wingnut on the end of the bolt.

I bet that new Moose filter breathes much better than the stocker. What do you oil it with?

BTW, 2lb bags of red potatoes are two for $4.00, according to your newspaper. Get in on that before they're gone!

Man! You DO notice all the background stuff in a pic!

I had an incident with my air filter also. Got it in and out....and was lucky enough to thread the wingbolt(?) back in without a ton of hassle. I did however,crack the plastic inner basket in one spot around the outer rim area upon original removal. It is quite thin and fragile, I found.
Is it the same basket as the DR200???????? I'm sure I'll eventually replace it.

As far as I can tell, both the DR and XF/XP baskets are the same. The Moose filter is a lot firmer and slightly thicker so it's a bit more difficult to get everything lined up while trying to screw in the wingbolt (good one 2LZ).

As for oil, there was none on the original nor any instructions with the new filter. I didn't put any on as I thought with the increased surface area, and quality, that I wouldn't have to worry about poor filtering.

2 pails of ice cream for $5.99! wow what a great deal, sure getting it home on the bike is going to be a little tricky.

I too have felt little an idiot spending 15 minutes trying to get the bolt back into the airbox after cleaning the filter. I have got a few of my ideas from the china moto site for the Q as well, good work on the new filter and let us know how it performs

You definitely want to oil it, the foam by itself will only stop the big stuff. I use No Toil, the alcohol based stuff. You can get complete kits with the cleaner, the oil and even gasket grease. I bought a bulk container of the No toil (2 litres) and I just use Oxy Clean to wash the filter. No more nasty solvents... You just have to make sure it's good and dry before you oil it.

I figured you might have been measuring the length of your fingernails, and I didn't want to embarrass you.

You gotta oil the filter and clean and re-oil at regular intervals. I use Maxima air filter spray, and I clean filters with Super Clean. Apparently, Super Clean is safe for the environment, but it's not very safe for aluminum.

Nope, not my fingernails. Is is the height of the floats according to the english version manual posted elsewhere on this site. It's not correct, however. The correct height is 18.5mm as listed in the Portuguese manual.

I don't even use a spec on the Mikunis. I just invert the carb and eyeball the plastic float parting line against the cast aluminum surface. So far, so good.

This whole float thing you'z guy'z are discussing, I have to keep in mind.
After the pipe, box drilling and jetting, I think I may be sucking the float partially dry upon heavy acceleration in the first few gears.
Small flat spots come and go........ First I thought I had the rear brake to tight and it may be dragging a bit in spots, as it's not even close to broke in and I'm sure the shoes aren't arc'ed. Loosened it....same symptom.
Gotta play with float now.

X3 on oiling the air filter! 8O The oil stops the dirt from entering the carburetor; the foam is only present as a structure to hold the oil.
