Since they aren't too much of an investment I will go ahead and give a unit from Aliexpress a try. I figure it can't be any worse than the factory shock, plus starting with a known spring rate would help in determining future potential custom applications. Some spacers are easy enough to make if necessary.

Yeah, that pic of your Goldwing... makes me salivate! An old bike, and as a mechanical engineer, typically old/miles means worn out for most users. However, seeing your near OCD (that's a compliment in this case) changing of fluids etc... that Goldwing is very appealing.

Well thank you! People wonder how I manage to keep my old vehicles up and running so good that I can daily drive them. My OCD and a lot of behind the scenes work goes a long way lol. My next work on it is to upgrade the swing arms to a newer needle and thrust bearing setup to replace the old bushing setup. Many upgrades I do to a vehicle tend to be beneath the surface. Reluability and longevity are my most important focus on any vehicle.

Update on the dyno situation....

As much as I hate to do this, I am nixing the stock dyno for one reason. The earliest I can get my bike in to have it dynoed is... September 12th. That was after calling the other 3 shops in town as well. Appearently, this is the worst time of the year to try and get in for a dyno tune. They won't run the dyno unless it is below 90 degrees, so they only run early morning and at night, which limits their hours. Then, aside from walk in customers like me, they also do work for other bike shops and dealerships around town, so they already have a 4 week waiting list just from that. He said that it might move up a week or two if the weather cools down, but it's not likely.

So, I am going to do the bolt on modifications and simply dyno the bike after that. I won't have a before to compare it to, but I figure even seeing the unlocked potential of the bike is fine, at least for me. It will also give me a before number for the head porting portion of my little expiriment.

Thus, my mods are going on tonight. Sorry to disappoint, but I am tired of waiting. If they would have told me 2 or 3 weeks I would have waited, but not 6+

Now you can claim hp increase s from their claimed ratings of 14 or so. No biggie and cheaper on the billfold.

Not really a matter of cheaper or not. I already had the 55 bucks set aside for it lol. I just didn't expect there to be such a long wait to get in for 3 measly dyno runs. I think what is causing it is this heat we have been experiencing making their dyno time limited to just a few hours out of the day. We have been consistently in the mid 90's for weeks now, and it hasn't let up once for longer than a day before it comes right back.

Yeah... I've taken a few weeks off to visit down here in mountainous Siguatepeque, Honduras. It's the rainy season... today I'm thinking the high will not even get to the usual 81 F. July / August climate - amazing. (I'd like to buy a cycle down here (new 150 cc street for under $700?) but my wife would be unhappy. Driving South of the border is a dangerous experience. Taxi around town - $1)

While it would be nice to quantify changes, they won't make that much difference on paper. What will really interest you is the difference between your Hawk with all the typical bolt-ons and then after some head work. That's what I'm looking forward to.

The head work is the one I do want to quantify the changes on more than anything. Exhaust and intake upgrades, while not a known quantity, are pretty much a given for a majority of owners anyway. Knowing what these bikes can do with the typical bolt ons is good enough for me at least.

Started doing my upgrades. A few little observations along the way.
I went ahead and did the airbox mod, but I accidentally took it a step further and broke off the center divider with my furious strength. I went ahead and installed the k&n filter, but I doubt there will be any increase in flow over the stock unit. I will try out both and see if the bike behaves any differently. After 700 miles of unkind riding, I was also pleasantly surprised to find that I had only a couple drops worth of oil in the airbox. So itssafe to say I have well seated rings. I plan on putting a pcv in the breather line while I have it all apart and open.

I am going to do a test fit of the oko carb with the boot I got to see if it will actually fit since the mounting angle is a bit different. For now I want to run the Mikuni just to kind of get a side by side comparison.

Exhaust. Yep, that stock one is heavy. I also found the weld obstruction at the header inlet I have seen mentioned before. (Pic). I also noticed that my muffler sounded like a moracca... So I gave the header a bit of a shake.and the cat did the same thing. Looks like the catalyst was starting to fall apart on me. So I may not have gotten an accurate stock dyno anyway.

All together minus the oko carb.

Minor fitment issues as expected with the exhaust. The biggest issue is that it not only touches the air box, but tries to occupy the same space so much that there is no real adjusting for it. I tried my best to tweak things, and bought it a little air gap, but it still started melting. I put a big wad of fibergladd wrapped in header wrap between the two and some thermal foil on the corner of the air box and it seems to be working. Likely I will have to modify the airbox, but I am going to switch to a pod filter for now so I can work on a solution.

The oko carb was a no go. The boot angles it down more than I would like, and not outward enough. It could work as is, but I want the carb more level. I am working on another solution at the moment that hopefully pans out. Othetwise I will be using a Mikunoiz adapter.

The mikuni needs a bigger main. My jet kit is missing the 120, but had 2 100 jets... figures. I have a genuine 120 on order. The 125 I have is just too rich. It might be ok with a pod filter, but not a modded airbox. So my top speed hasnt changed much, but I can now cruise along at 60 and maintain it. It just has nothing left in it with the main being so lean.

Looks like things are really coming along on your build, Dan. Everything looks really nice and neat on there, and I'm happy to see you're working through the upgrade related problems in a methodical fashion. I put a pod filter on my Hawk after I had the same problem with my exhaust cooking the airbox. Made a lot of difference in the way the bike sounded since there wasn't the restrictive box to muffle the intake pulses. Give me a shout if you have any questions, but it looks like you have a pretty good handle on things.
