need advice

I'm looking at buying a 125cc pit bike and seeing alot of chinese made ones for a decent price but I've read a bunch of mixed reviews about the quality of the bikes. My question is what is the general opinion on the build quality of these machines?

Have you got a more specific bike in mind ? The quality is all over the map ,so depending on your price point ,your riding style ,weight ,and general usage it very hard to give a proper answer .

Generally they are fine and are getting better all the time. AFAIK Apollo makes a decent product. They have been around for what feels like forever. It's been a while since I've messed with one. It's not going to come in tuned with kinks worked out like you get at a dealer and a Jap bike. Most of the complaints come from people who do not understand this and have little to no mechanical ability nor do they want any. In the end parts are cheap and ebay is your friend.

I don't know what you want to do with it but here are a few links from APSC.

If you want some product specific answers I would call and talk to Greg or Don at APSC. You can call killer why your at it but it's been my experience Don at APSC actually knows what he is selling and normally has a decent price. I've had some okay luck with Killer they always seem nice but in the end I don't think the guy you are talking too knows what he is selling. It's a picture on a screen. Buying from killer and APSC no complaints.

Excellent advice nonone !

My purchase was between apscusa.com and gokartsusa.com, but gokartsusa.com won out because I'm a cheap sob. Apscusa.com was not bad on price and if you need a little more support from a retailer this is the place as witnessed from this forum.

I come from a family of mechanics so once i get the thing i should have no problems with set up and the like. I just wanted to get a feel for the general quality of the machines ( mostly make sure that it wasnt gonna be a buy it and plan on swapping a motor in 2 weeks ) and decent sellers for them. So ill look at the websites y'all suggested and then prolly go with the cheapest cause im a cheap shit like that haha. Thank you all for the assistance

Break it , modify, fix, repeat.

Ask some of the vet of this site, quality has really improved since 2006.

You won't have a problem. Any little thing you can fix and you have a panel of experts (not myself...) here for help.

For the most part the engines and frames are solid. It's the small things attached to the frame and engine that typically cause problems. If you have the tools and basic skills you will be fine. If you have or can tap someone with a great understanding you are that much better off. But for the most part every piece on a china bike is designed to be fixed on a side of the road with hand tools and a basic understanding of how it works.

A decent seller is half the battle. Both Killer and APSC are fine. I would call and talk to both. At the very least you will have some answers and a feel for who you are dealing with you may even be able to work out a better deal.

You may be able to get a good deal on this. I know he has had them for at least 2 years but he has always had them priced at $749 as far as I know.

Here is some leverage / cheaper models you have to factor in shipping for these I think they always charge $180 for the 125's.
